Do you also think that TER is for hardcore PF fans only? Not for every one of them, though:

Is there anyone who seriusly care about the ratings ?
Everyone know its so full of manipulations and misunderstandings.

Wrong.  Dean has explained in painstaking detail that all of the "ratings manipulations" do not amount to a hill of beans.  Even though people think they are making a big difference by doing it, he showed the math which suggests that non-weighted, non-reviewing ratings make almost no difference to an albums overall score.  Especially an album with several collab reviews under its belt.

Frankly, I agree with your first sentence, for different reasons...but the reason you give in your second sentence is not really a factor.

Ok, I wont argue with the math.

I have given up on the idear that Music is like a contest, looking for winners and loosers, and being disappointed if my favorites get a low score. But I can understand it, its only natural.

Prog is whatevey you want it to be. So dont diss other peoples prog, and they wont diss yours

^And I'm with you on that my friend.  I couldn't care less about "ratings" and competition.  I'd be very happy to see the site drop ratings and do only reviews.

My only point was that people who are aware of how little these "manipulations" matter to the overall standings should not lose sleep.  It's a non issue.

I can see what you are saying, but most of the people see numeric ratings on PA and elsewhere as notches on a linear scale scale:

1 is awful (in my definition, "non-music")
2 is bad
3 is a passing grade .. so-so .. average .. if I don't (didn't) have it already, I may never buy it
4 is good (nice-to-have; should buy as soon as I can)
5 is great (must-have)

In other words, for 99% of people who see 2 on the scale from 1 to 5 will interpret it as "bad", which PA substituted with a PC euphemism "for fans only".

Ah, no problem with that but if we drop ratings only, foreign language reviews must be accepted, Finn. Nobody wants PA to become an elite country club, isn't it?

No problem there Martin, just a pipe dream anyway.  Ratings are not going anywhere, we know that.  Smile

Listened to this again today while strolling through a shopping mall, while being bombarded by Holiday commercialism, it was like talking to an old friend again.  On opening notes, you know right away who it is.  It makes me smile...Big smile

My rating - I like it

About ratings... I do like the idea of them and use them a lot. Why? Because reading a bunch of reviews from every albun of an artist I'm interested in takes a lot of time, and then each person has their own opinions, and they are not necessarily the same for the writer as for the reader, so in order to form an opinion about how much the taste of the writer is compatible with your own, you might also need to read many reviews from each writer too. On the other hand, numbers are easy, and they point you in a direction to start with. You check out the highest rated albums first, check out some of the reviews, and if it convinces you you buy that album. Then, depending on what you think about said album, you can go on with the next ones. Besides, ratings work on statistics, and they don't lie nor are they prejudiced... well, not so easily at least. They are not perfect either, nor should they be taken as the only way to search for music, but they are a very useful tool.

4 Stars for me.

I honestly find it tough to figure out how anyone could give this a 2, not that I'm bothered in the slightest.  I do my best to ignore the ratings and use reviews when weighing up possible purchases.  I just find the reviews of reviewers I know and trust and go from there.

It's more "real" Floyd than the last 2 albums in my opinion. As a nostalgic reflection through their career it's a perfect way to say adieu.

If you like Floyd you are guaranteed to like this, if you don't then you won't.

Wow, non-English reviews aren't allowed? That's quite a pity; I never realized that.

Yeah, If they were and you had to use a translator then other problems arise. The composition gets ruined. We used to have an infamous guy around here who wrote reviews in his native language and then used an online translator before posting. While it did make for extremely entertaining reading they were useless for reviewing purposes.

These should have kept, perhaps not as reviews, but in a separate non-music section, for entertainment and bona fide educational purposes .. "see, Jr., that's how we do not speak" :)

It would be fun, wouldn't it, if some reviews were written in Newspeak (soundcrime, unmusic, doubleplusungood instead of 1-star etc). Perhaps I should try to smuggle a few words of this nature into my essay next time I get around to reviewing something Wacko

I think the guy was Japanese. Really difficult to read his reviews. He did a few Chicago reviews......very hard to make heads or tails of them.......
'Kazuhiro' I think he went by. Looks like a straight translation.....

LOL  No, my "like" is a 3 to 4 range.  Closer to 4 in this case!

Right now, my favorite "Side" is Side 2, I am sure it will change with each listen...

Half stars would be excellent. Like the 2.5  stars that I think this album deserves.
