I always thought the Who's Tommy was a concept double-LP. The music sucks (especially the drums), but the concept was great. However I don't seem to see Tommy anywhere in the Prog Archives. Why not?

Although it is a concept album it is still rock. Bold statement about the music sucking though, with great song like I'm free, The Doctor, Acid Queen and on and on...

THe music sucks mean: it has poor re-play value. You hear it thrice and you no longer find anything new there. Its fairly simple. The drums sounded so cliche-- I don't know why many music reviewers term Keith Moon as a great drummer (for instance the drum rolls used in the chorus-- Tommy can you hear me?  is the crappiest roll I ever heard and he repeatedly used the same roll throughout-- making it unbearable for me).
This album did not have a single song that is memorable as a song. But the album did have a solid foundation-- which I appreciate. The Who had been very loud-- but musically never smart. It did use the first Moog synth in Who's Next, that was revolutionary. But I am talking about music contents, where the Who sucks.

You can call Tommy anything you like, but I do not want to call it prog.
Not every conceptalbum is per definition prog.

I like the album, but only if I listen to it once a year or so.

Tommy is not the best album of all time and not the best album by The Who, at least in my opinion. However, it's without question a classic of rock music with many enjoyable and very well done tunes, some of them being memorable indeed. The Who by that time were evolving from a standard "mod" and rhythm and blues band to a hard rock outfit which ocassionly made some art rock too.

I don't think The Who are prog, but they wrote some prog tracks: Sparks, Underture, Quadrohpenia, The Rock (if those songs aren't prog then what is prog??), and they influenced a great deal of bands including prog ones.

And remember, the fact that you dislike certain band it doesn't mean that they suck, nobody holds the ultimate truth about "good music taste", do you?

Tommy is a strange album by The Who, and even though it's mainly Rock (I'm Free, See Me Feel Me, etc) and Pop (Pimball Wizard), but also  has  a couple of Prog' tracks like Overture and Underture, Amazing Journey, etc).

I love this album, not in the league of Who's Next, but still great.

I agree; Who's Next is easily their best album, and maybe one of the best albums ever.

Arguing on the internet is a lot like the special olympics - even if you win, you're still retarded.

"The music sucks, but the concept is great", where in the world did you picked up this statement???

However, if you think this "sucks", why are you relating this to the archives??? Do you think that because something "sucks", it should be in??? Are you on drugs???

Keith Moon is a great drummer, and in general, The Who is an excellent hard rock band. Tommy is a great piece of work by this band as well as other albums by The Who...

Isn't it true Moon caused Townshend problems  for the types of tune he wrote for the Who because of Moon's  limited range of time signatures, which was one of many reasons Townshend  went out and did his own albums, normally without any other members of the Who?

There are many explanations for this, but IMO the most evident are:

  1. IMO Pete is an egomaniac (As most genius), I think he even said once he was the only great musician in The Who.
  2. Pete was the main and almost exclusive songwritter and the way he imagined the music on his mind was always away from what any normal musician could achieve.
  3. Again IMO Townsend always under estimated the abilities of the other members of the band.
  4. Keith was never a technical drummer, he had a lot of faillures, but he was a force of nature, he replaced any lack of technical ability with extreme power and speed plus a lot of healthy madness.

OK, what album is discussed here, the sountrack of the movie or the original? I have the soundtrack as a purchase of my youth, and nowadays... it kinda sucks, too many "rock stars" performing. But my borther in law owns the original, and is pretty fine by me...
Please forgive me for my crappy english!
