So, where do you stand on Vangelis?

I only really have his earlier albums, which come in a few different categories for me:

Top Notch: H&H, Albedo, Spiral

Wonderful: Earth, China, Antarctica, Soil Festivities, Mask, The City

Solid: L'Apocalypse, Ignacio, Opera Sauvage, See You Later, Direct, Voices, Mr Cairo, Private Collection

OK: Fete Sauvage, Short Stories, The Dragon

A Struggle: Hypothesis, Beaubourg, Odes & Rapsodies

Don't Ask: Invisible Connections

Your turn?

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

^^^ thank you for your list! what I like about it is although we've established that we have essentially different tastes when it comes to Prog, it's nice that we both enjoy Vangelis, even though we might put the albums in a different order?

^ Yes I suppose none of us should be surprised that we got different favorites, but hey we both think Earth* is wonderful:). However, it does surprise me somewhat that you think Odes is a struggle to listen to. I think it's simply stunning. Not Progressive Rock of course, but foreshadowing Dead Can Dance progressive approach to different musical traditions of the past - five or six years prior to them. But you may not be into DCD either.

Edit: corrected

No-one enhanced the Vangelis sound quite like the voice and theatricality of Irene Papas on Odes and Rhapsodies, IMO

I've listened to Odes again as I must admit I haven't heard either Papas album in quite a wile... and I'd move it into the 'OK' category, mainly for the Vangelis sole pieces... I really can't give it higher than that; it doesn't do a great deal for me in comparison with most of his discography.
