Try SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES' "Kaleidoscope" album from 1980. Very different to most of their other work, it's a very inventive progressive pop album, with unusual, innovative arrangements, clever and obtuse lyrics and all kinds of musical references (hard rock, symphonic prog, Kraftwerk-style electronica, jazz, etc.). If you like it, then buy "A Kiss In The Dreamhouse" (1982) and "Peepshow" (1988), which are also extremely eclectic and intellgient albums.

XTC, Sloan (from Canada), Wondermints (Brian Wilson's current touring band), Kula Shaker (now defunct) to add a few...

Poe - Haunted
Poppy but smart record from a female songwriter who has a great voice. It is a concept album based on a book by the singer's brother, Mark Danielewski, called House of Leaves. I recommend both the book and the record.

SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES looks rather familiar to me, so wil ask around!
XTC is yet to be heard- I saw a good choice of their albums just across the road..
I'm also very curious about the rest named above. Thanks.

I prefer XTC to Steely Dan simply because their music incorporates so many different styles, not just West Coast jazz-inflected rock, and the fact that XTC songs cover the gamut of moods, not just bitterly cynical. And you get more than just one person's viewpoint/voice; Colin Moulding has contributed some of XTC's best songs, perfectly complementing Andy Partridge's genius.

Said it before, if you like XTC (and their alt egos Dukes Of The Stratosphear), try Stackridge.
