Mastadon is pretty good (although they're not sludge. Let's stay on topic people!) I like their Leviathan album. |
They were considered sludge by many fans, websites, reviewers, etc early in their career.

It tends to be more on the hardcore side for me, though I love the opener. If you are looking for drone try their collaboration with Sunn 0))), it is more complex/interesting than Sunn and more doomy than Boris |
Yes I have that too. I have to be in a very specific mood to listen to it , but I think it's pretty entertaining. Not my favorite approach by any means though.

by "specific mood" I think you mean stoned
Yea, I love drone but no one can listen to it every day, it would not be good for your health.
Is Jesu considered sludge, Godflesh are but...

I agree with the Sunn O))) / Boris album. I personally enjoy it more than Black One and most of Boris' discography. Any thoughts on where they'll land next? Their Vein album was pretty much a Hardcore affair. I wish they could make at least another Feedbacker or Amplifier Worship.

Vein had two versions, and one was noisy drone. ;)

I saw an interview on youtube with them where they said their next album they wanted to replicate their 70's heroes (Led Zep) but then they also said they were working on a noise project as well. You just never know with those guys.

Yeah, I forgot about that, but you know what I mean. They seem to be getting faster and faster with every album they release. I wouldn't mind seeing a full on Drooooone Doooooom release (sorry, couldn't resist).

Personally I want to hear more of their work along the lines of Rainbow, their album with Michio Kurihara, its verry ambient and almost post-rock.

Split personalities? Their collaboration with Michio Kurihara was in another direction. Very enjoyable too. I like these kind of bands that keep the listeners in suspense ad you never know what to expect from them.

I really like "sludge metal". Be it Sleep, Isis, Goatsnake, Crowbar, and so on. They're all rocktastic. The slow churning heavy riffs and thunder drums beat the sh*t out of my ears which is exactly what they like a good chunk of the time.

Yeah, love the stuff, probably the most interesting avenues metal has taken over the last few years. I think my brain is still trying to recover after Moss' 2005 album.
That Lady Holle track off the Holy McGrail f**king rocks.
Still kicking myself I didn't end up going to the Sunn o))) and Boris concert a little while back.

I just got this record, freakin' great! plenty sludgy, but lots of nice layers to offset the heavy sound.

I have that album on my PC, but still haven't listened to it... I'll check it out today. Moss is on my wishlist. I've heard good things about the band. Anyone familiar with Keelhaul? I'm listening to them as we speak and these guys are impressive. I had hard time imagining a band doing math rock and sludge together and the curiosity got the best of me. Very impressive.
