One question, I read somewhere that Mad Man Moon was composed in Gabriel's era but never reached an album and after a few years re created for ATOTT.

Does someone knows if this is true?

I also read somewhere that the title track was originally written at the time of Foxtrot. Given the doubts about whether the band would continue after Gabriel left, it's not surprising that they polished up some slightly older material for ATOTT. What's really impressive is that they could leave 2 songs of that quality aside for a few years!

I think the band outdid themselves trying to prove that they could keep it together after Gabriel's departure. They may have wanted to prove that they could still deliver the same quality, with a similar or comparable style to the classic albums (ironically a step backwards from "The Lamb", but that disc was already leaning towards Gabriel's solo style in places). By stripping some of Gabriel's art and theater impulses, which had already begun to mutate into a style at odds with the pre-existing Genesis 'image', the band actually returned to a more 'classic Genesis' delivery.

Of course, this was relatively temporary; once they'd proven that they could deliver something as good as "Trick of the Tail", the band began to look forward, to see where they could go from that point.

I'm thinking that Gabriel's solo sucess may have been a factor in the band's move away from the classic prog sound; seeing Peter get some deserved acclaim for embracing modern elements and generally 'going all artsy', the remaining members of Genesis may have taken this as a sign that they too should evolve towards a more modern approach. So one might say that Gabriel was inderectly as responsible as Collins for the growing trendiness of the band.

Dance on a Volano is excellent, a very catchy and well made tune.

It's a great album ... although I've still got the preceeding 5 Gabriel albums higher on my list ... and I'm also with Maani (on an earlier post) that And Then There Were Three has some great progressive songs

Its a great album. Dance on a Volcano is the first Genesis track I ever heard - Not counting the rubbish they were putting into the charts at the time (1983 ish)

I dont think it would have been any better if PG had sung on it. PC done a brilliant job IMO. The production is perfect, and the atmosphere and feel of the album is that of classic 70's prog. The melodies are rich and memorable, and the albums oozes melancholy and mystery.

I was never keen on 'Robbery Assault and Battery' although it does have some great moments, to be specific, any point in thw song where PC is not singing!!  The instrumental sections of the song are great.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Whereas I prefer "Wind & Wuthering" to "A Trick of the Tail" in terms of Hackett/Collins era GENESIS, I almost always recommend "A Trick..." to newer GENESIS fans or to people I'm trying to convert. And it never seems to fail. People always have nothing but praise for this album. The Phil Collins we know and love (i.e. before it all went to pot)
Marmalade...I like marmalade.

I like Trick of the tail, the best album in the Collins era imho. But i agree with Trotsky, Tresspas till Lamb are better. I would like to hear Peter singing Trick, oh god
