Portishead without trip-hop beats? Couldn't wait to hear it... but I was disappointed. It didn't grab my attention at all.

Wow, I had to content myself with all the Hooverphonic albums in the meantime, most excellent . Are there any fans of this Belgian band out there?

It's the first thing by them that I've heard, which probably is beginning at the wrong end or something. Very good album though,

Bumping this thread now that this is my #2 CD of 2008 (and #1 if we only count albums officially released so far).
Also, I prefer this to Dummy, which is the only other Portishead I've heard.

That new single 'Machine Gun' on their myspace site sounds very promising.

It is absolutely addictive brilliant music. Deceptively simple and repetitive, they have produced a progressive and finest work, just like Radiohead did in the autumn.
It takes control of you.

"Out of Season" was amazing, especially "Funny Time of Year" (top 10 track at my LastFM charts! ). I like the first two CDs and looking forward to this one!

Dummy was a nice one, the s/t second was killer. Loved the Out of Season album, like a folkish Talk Talk. so lookin fwd to gettin slain by this one...............another great unique Brit institution like Talk Talk/Mark Hollis, David Sylvian, Bark Psychosis et al

Oh my. A uke. (Always a worring sign)
And no groovy trip-hop
Still, I liked Out Of Season
And Beth Gibbons' voice,
So on balance, a new Portishead... Woo!

What?

Either way, I'll gonna get it I suppose. But, from what you've said, I won't be disappointed. I hope. | I doubt that you will.It took me by surprise. There is one track that is just Gibbons singing only accompanied by a ukelele!
