Back to the usual mix of old and new this week. Reminder of the late Tony Oxley drumming on the first album by British jazzers I ever bought, McLaughlin's 'Extrapolation'. Other jazz related: Electrocution 250 (fusion at 100mph), two recently disinterred obscure brass rock bands, Guillotone and Kush, Jan Bang, plus taster tracks off Kim Sajn +1's forthcoming album 'Wayfinding'. Reissues of sorts: The Faces, Guru Guru, 13th Floor Elevators, Mr Big. Avant rock: Officer!, Danile Ogren, and I might include Buckethead here as well. Plus much more. Next week: music with brass backing.

Come Easter we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the ALT2 Show on LCR, and only a few tee shirts could made using the artwork conjured up by Andy Marlow over a  decade ago. Unless you live in Loughborough and can collect, prohibitive postage costs limit us taking orders. However, we are very happy to send you a copy of the artwork, so you can have your own made up personally.

Hello February already!! Tonight another indulgence into popular music augmented with brass or other wind instruments, with a very brief guide to roots and then some of the popular bands and the obscure. Listing the obscure: Californian Transit Authority (Chicago meets Tower Of Power), the one off of UK's Satisfaction, Rock Workshop (a start point for Ray Russell and Alex Harvey), another Austrian guitar whizz Conrad Schrenk, 64 Spoons, Chase, Rastus and Nojazz. You should have heard of Dreams and Ides Of March. Be with me from 9pm GMT.

Next week: new releases from Alan Benjamin, Kimara Sajn, Isildurs Bane & Jinian Wilde, Gary Lucas. Plus fun: a familiar tune sung in a particular Yorkshire accent, by gum.

New and future releases sampled: supergroup PAKT, Gary Lucas & Yass Body, Kevin Burt, Kimara Sajn, Chris O'Leary, Mark Trecka, and last but not least Isuldurs Bane with Jinian Wilde.... not forgetting Alan Benjamin of Advent solo release. The precursor song that evolved into Soft Machine's 'Moon In June' and then that great independent record label Moonjune Records. Archive scoured for Cliff Bennett & The Rebelrousers, Martha & The Muffins, early Dr Feelgood, the Everly Brothers (backed by member of the Hollies & Led Zeppelin, now there's a combination), and the Everly Pregnant Brothers????? And much more....

We have a recent Grammy winner on this Taylor Swift-free show - which begs the question, how many categories do they award Grammies for? New recordings from: Dr Feelgood, Jharis Yokley, Ches Smith, Plantoid, Gary Lucas, Isildurs Bane & Jinian Wilde, UFO (celebrating their 50th anniversary). Folk from Fairport Convention (who coincidentally happen to be playing at Loughborough Town Hall this week), and The Magpie Arc. Joe Walsh following a suggestion by our station manager. Dutch southern rock?! Other sorts of blues from Les Butler & The Red Devils, Ali Farka Toure. There's electronica and the inevitable jazz.

Hello Again,

Tonight's ALT2 Show has another mix of old and new. Jazz fusion from Miles Davis (a request), Scott Henderson, Heliocentrics, The Fire Merchants, Stanley Clarke/Jeff Beck and Fela Kuti. New and recent prog: The Pineapple Thief, Malcolm Galloway, Isildurs Banes/Jinian Wilde, Magnum, Moron Police. From half a century or so ago: Moby Grape, Skip Spence, Spencer Davis Group, Nicky Hopkins, Phil Ochs, Mike Bloomfield and the obscure Yesterday's Children. And there's music from more recent times.

Next week, all music released in 1969 when (IMHO) popular music took sort of quantum change.

Another special.... Too often I hear pundits telling me that a specific year has been special for certain types of music. To me 1969 is special wrt transitions in rock, with forms of heavy rock, progressive rock, jazz rock and folk rock becoming crystallised in the hands and with the voices of musicians, many of whom remain popular in 2024. To be honest 120 minutes or so is not long enough to include many ... although I have probably played those bands in the recent past and in the near future. So please enjoy those tunes I've brought to the show tonight.

Thanks to everybody who wrote in wrt last week's 1969 Special. Back to another sort of  normality tonight, although I've been digging deeper into the archives for obscurities ignored for too long. This includes sampling some of  the Wire magazine's 100 alternative essential albums you should be listening to (apparently), including X103, Comus, Ram John Holder, the Walker Brothers (interestingly) and Kip Hanrahan. In the meanwhile I've selected Antique Seeking Nun, Dan Hartman. A couple from the later Kevin Ayers, who I discovered didn't drop out of the music industry after leaving the Soft Machine, was because Jimi Hendrix gave him a guitar and told him to write more interesting songs. There's several recent releases sent me and plenty more.

Hello,

From a very damp East Midlands, I hope to bring you some warm and not too dry music. Old and new jazz (fusion): Notilus, Julian Lage, Balawan, Zerekore, and Bruford. Reissues/remasters: Dire Straights, Tim Blake, Anthony Phillips. Older rock: Be Bop Deluxe, Crack The Sky (with my earwig of the week), Rare Earth, Alan Parsons & Arthur Brown. Blues:  BBA, Robert Johnson, Bruce Hampton etal, Walter Trout . Steve Reich anybody? Relative strangeness hidden in the archives: Beats Antiques, Antique Seeking Nun. And there's more.....

This show has a few moments reminding Loughborough students, that March 2024 represents 50 years since a team of students, first represented Loughborough University. As that team's  manager I thought  I would reminisce.

Otherwise the show is as normal as usual. Jazz from Wayne Krantz, Donny McCaslin, Chris Potter and friends, Ulysses Owens Jr.  Avant rock from Brthym (who include Bruce Hornsby), Honeycrush, Narcotix, Michael Peter Olsen. Trips down memory lane, with Argent, Stefan Grossman, Van Der Graaf Generator, Jan Hammer, Truk, Creedence, Steamhammer. Blues and much more else.

A quick decision and we've decided to broadcast through the Easter Vac here at Loughborough, ALT2 Shows that were previously broadcast 3 or more  years ago. Tonight  a covers show from 2021 you probably missed, and obviously as a covers show, I give you usually familar tunes performed less familar musicians.

Please note it is also worth checking LCR's sustain service between 7 and 9pm BST, for tunes that are NOT played by other sustain stations who otherwise continue to play to death  the bleeding obvious. Next week 'At Last The 1971 Show'.

Please note the UK is now in British Summer Time (BST).

Penultimate Easter Vac Show going out tonight on LCR. This is a repeat from 2020, and is the first part of a two part series concentrating on music first issued in 1971. This is the year many pundids believe was the most fruitful in the development of rock. Part 2 is going out next week. Compared with normal ALT2 Shows there are more well known tracks, although I think you'll discover a few goodies you've not heard before.

May I suggest checking out LCR's sustain programming from 7 to 9pm most evenings, including tonight. Our station manager, Taime, has gone out of his way to raid the back catalogue, not for the tedium of golden oldies (heard too often elsewhere), rather great but less familar tunes.

We are celebrating my 40th anniversary with LCR after Easter, and an Andy Marlow designed teeshirt has been created. If you're curious to see what this looks like please reply to this address.

Just reminder, I also do a different sort of monthly ALT2 Show for the Album Zone people, some of which get streamed, such as the March 2024 edition:

The last of the Easter Vac repeats, continuing on from last week's special Part 2 of music from 1971, perhaps the best year for rock innovations. Back to a normal next with a new show. Expect in weeks to come music from the new Elephant9 and Gren Bartley albums, and a feature on the late Ollie Halsall.
