Sub-genres (in no order of preference) :

Pomp-prog : Rush

Neo-prog : Marillion

art-rock : Supertramp (Your attention please : do not mistake art-rock for hard-prog, art-rock is a more commercial side of prog i.e. bands such as Roxy Music, Supertramp, Mannfred Mann's earth band... hard-prog is the darkest side of prog i.e. bands such as VDGG, KC or Anekdoten. OK ?)

hard-prog : King Crimson

electronic (aka "New Age") : Tangerine Dream

Ambient : Eno

Symphonic prog : earlier Genesis

Classical prog : Emerson, lake & Palmer

Zeuhl : Magma

Canterbury : Caravan

Space-rock : Pink Floyd

Jazz-fusion : Soft Machine (post-Wyatt)

Metal-prog : Dream Theater

Rock In Opposition : Henry Cow (Chris Cutler founded this sub-genre)

Folk-prog : Jethro Tull

Continental-prog : Premiata Forneria Marconi

Krautrock : Amon Düül II

BTW : Gentle giant is symphonic prog and not art-rock and Flower Kings is symphonic prog too.

I found this wicked link - 'scuse me if you've seen it before, but the author clearly both loves his subject and writing about it, so thought I'd share (it's just about on-topic, as it discusses Art rock in depth)

If the author is here - good show, sir!

Yes, you're maybe right with GG but the Flower Kings are Retro Prog, because for me Retro IS Symphonic, I always thought that Retro means newer bands trying to sound like 70' symphonic bands

Naw!

Some of those aren't art rock, but other genres of prog.  I think he's painting with too wide a brush.

I know what he's saying, but I disagree with his terminology.

I think mr. Pipes, as well as countless other people who study music, fail to subdivide prog into its separate categories. All Music Guide made the same error (if anyone has visited the site, you will know what I mean)
