Seeing as this is a general music board, I thought I'd ask your opinions on who you think will win this years Mercury Prize tonight. For those who don't know, the albums nominated are as follows:
Two Suns - Bat for Lashes Lungs - Florence and the Machine Friendly Fires - Friendly Fires Glasvegas - Glasvegas West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum - Kasabian La Roux - La Roux Sensible Shoes - Led Bib Sea Sew - Lisa Hannigan Speech Therapy - Speech Debelle Twice Born Men - Sweet Billy Pilgrim Primary Colours - The Horrors The Invisible - The Invisible Who's it gonna be then? |

I only know the first two - Florence and the Machine sounds too "constructed" for my liking, but she/they are flavour of the month at the moment. Bat For Lashes is a better prospect - I really enjoy Two Suns.

Is the Mercury Prize somehow related to Freddy Mercury? I've not heard of any of these except for Bat For Lashes and Led Bib, and that is mostly only because of discussion regarding them here on PA. I've not heard Bat For Lashes, and I've only heard one Led Bib song.

The Mercury prize is named after its original sponsor Mercury Communications (now absorbed into the T-Mobile corp) - even though they no longer sponsor the competition, the name remains.

The Horrors
Not based on preference as i've only heard bis and pieces of these artists. Although the panel tend to be slightly more mature than your average Horrors fan.

That's part of the charm of the Mercury - up until recently even Classical albums were nominated (and there is no reason why they still can't be) - some years have seen Tavener up against Simply Red and St Etienne, (or against the Prodigy and The Spice Girls), and Nyman against Pulp and Take That. In a way it forces people to look outside narrow genres and regard music as a whole.
