Alex, listen to Meshuggah's "Closed Eye Visuals" is the best example I can give straight off the bat.  The guitars make a very noticeable "djun DJEN djun djun DJENT djun djun DJENT" kind of noise.  That guitar tone is djent, and that word itself is just onomatopoeia for that signature sound.  That's the thing all djent bands share in common.


I, personally, don't think so. Gorguts did used a lot of distortion and sounds that would be later used by the post thrash metal bands (AKA djen bands), but I don't think they are related.

I could be wrong in that matter, since those are not my favorite bands, with the exception of Meshugga, but AFAIK they don't have any correlation.

Hmm, those guys have a pretty lax definition of djent. They even have Blotted Science there, which is the opposite of djent.


Very loose. Even Canvas Solaris is there. Wacko

Djent is one of these alleged genres that works well as a stylistic seasoning much better than a main dish. I enjoy those that incorporate it like 1980, Coprofago and Animals as Leaders rather than those who do one thing like Periphery. I was big into it for awhile, but it got old real fast.
