Sankara came together in late 2010, when singer Gareth Jones (ex-The Reasoning) and guitarist Jay MacDonald (ex-Bluehorses) got together with the intention of writing music that they love playing. After a few demo songs were tracked, they realised they were on to a great opportunity, and asked drummer Vinden Wylde (ex-The Reasoning) and bassist Rhayn Jooste (ex-Bluehorses) to join them in search of Fortune and Glory. The four founder members worked really well together and found that as they all had different influences, they could bring something unique to the band.
In October 2011 they released the Enigma EP. This four track offering allows a gentle introduction and a promise of what is to come.
In December 2011 they released the Tori Amos song Precious Things. This cover version is a favourite of all the band and features in the live set.

Well the new album's called 'Guided By Degrees', and it's all mixed, mastered, pressed and printed...but not officially on sale until the launch party later this year (date not yet specified to my knowledge). Amazon have it on their site in digital format (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Guided-By-Degrees/dp/B0096H6C3C), and you can listen to 30 sec samples, but the full tracks are not available to purchase at the moment, and release date is stated on there as 17 Nov 2012.

From the short samples on Amazon this promises to be a very fine Melodic Rock/AOR album with perhaps just a hint of prog, but we won't know for sure unless someone who already has the CD (yes, there are some circulating following the band's appearance at the Cambridge Rock Festival last month), or the band themselves, can provide samples for the team (It'll almost certainly be Crossover who get to evaluate this) to listen to.

The Enigma EP from last year can be heard on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/sankaramusic or facebook: http://www.facebook.com/sankaramusic or spotify: http://open.spotify.com/album/4DG2BAM4xmt3CFc5sXGukV, who also have the single 'Precious Things': http://open.spotify.com/album/4XRmLL6FAy4K8SUCRjYasm.
The track 'In God We Trust' is also available to listen to on soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/sankaramusic/in-god-we-trust

Again, this music is very well crafted Melodic Rock/AOR, great to listen to, but rather weak on the prog side.

The reviews section of the band's website bear this out too: http://sankara.co.uk/reviews/, as does Keishiro's response when the band was suggested in this forum last year, around the time of the release of the EP: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=80771 - in fact he even went as far as to say that the site couldn't give them any place to live in... Shocked

Have matters changed sufficiently with the new material to make him change his view, I ask... Ermm

The band is from Cardiff, Wales, so maybe Steve (lazland) knows more about them?

Bass player Rhayn Jooste actually left the band in early August, just after the C.R.F. gig, and as far as I know has not yet been replaced.

Until we have full samples of 'Guided By Degrees', there's not much more we can do with this at the moment to be honest, so we await further input, as the saying goes... Ermm

In the meantime:

Hmmm very nice, but is it prog...? Thumbs Up  Ermm

Well, I'm familiar with The Reasoning!

The YouTube samples here are very much good melodic classic rock. Having said that, much of The Reasoning's is too, although, to be fair, the prog influences with that venerable band shine through far more than this.

I would agree with David here. Let's have some samples of the new album, and I will lend a sympathetic ear.

The album was officially released three days ago, and can now be bought on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Guided-By-Degrees/dp/B0096HK7WY. Brian Dade played the whole of it in his 'Album Munchie' show on AiiRadio.net last night, and the show was recorded and can be streamed for about the next 6 days.

The show also featured some more excellent melodic prog in the form of Primitive Instinct's new album 'One Man's Refuge', and Legend's recently re-mastered epic track 'Triple Aspect', originally released in 1996, before Sankara's album begins, so move the slider along to somewhere around the 2hr 14min 30sec mark to start off with Sankara's stuff. http://www.livestream.com/aiiradionet/video?clipId=pla_1c128059-e37b-4568-abbf-61ada2bcef82

The team will need to move quite quickly on this, as the recording of the show will be taken down just before next week's is due, and I don't know of any other free sample sources.

http://soundcloud.com/sankaramusic (7 samples - mainly old stuff, but including one finished track and also a demo from 'Guided By Degrees')

Definitely belongs on here in my view, but not sure about the sub - it's a mix of Crossover, Neo and a bit of Heavy to my ears. Has a quite a strong Hard Rock/AOR feel in places too I suppose, but this is really quite excellent stuff on balance - hopefully there'll be enough prog overall to satisfy the judges.  Thumbs Up

Edit: Ignore that crap I wrote just up there about not knowing of any other sample sources: http://open.spotify.com/album/2wTFK420G3vUEphlZiqZmj  Embarrassed  And for those living in countries that don't have spotify, or who merely don't like it, there is a small flash-based media player about half way down the band's homepage: http://sankara.co.uk, which is loaded with all the songs in an auto-playlist (full samples). I couldn't get the scroll bar to work on my computer (the 'now playing' info popped up and masked it out everytime I moved the mouse over the player to try to move it), so the last three titles weren't immediately accessible - I had to wait for them to load automaticlly one by one in sequence after track seven had finished playing. Small matter really though. Embarrassed

Now let's get 'em on the site!

These guys don't appear to have been evaluated yet - nothing for them on progfreak. I just tried to add the artist myself to save a bit of time, but for some strange reason the site won't accept http://sankara.co.uk/ in the Homepage field - it just throws up an error: the url doesn't appear to be correct. Please verify that it begins with "http://" and that it works when you open it in a new browser window.

Well it does begin with http:// and it does work in a new browser window, so what exactly is wrong here I ain't got a clue. Confused

Tried with both IE9 and Google Chrome and same thing happened. Never had this problem adding an artist before, so hopefully someone else will have better luck!

Anyhow - borderline case for Crosssover, I expect. The music is probably going to be considered too much slanted toward Classic Rock/AOR for this site, but hopefully the team will go through the motions, and we can then draw a line under the case.

Full samples are available on the band's website via an embedded tunecore player (see my previous post) or via myspace: http://myspace.com/sankaramusic, including the previous 'Enigma' EP.

Decent stuff, even if it doesn't get added here. Thumbs Up

Hmm... from the provided live bits I can't see them fitting anywhere properly, I'm afraid.
