I started this thread at Prog Ears, but the way that site is structured the thread disappeared very quickly with few comments - so I'm trying here:

I see in recent Amazon.UK blurbs for a few bands's albums the term prog pop being used, e.g. for bands such as School Of Language, That Was The Week and (the recent South Banks Arts award winners) Everything Everything. Having bought these three bands’ albums, I discover that in part the term seems to indicate the use of prog instrumentation, arrangements, etc. but with a significantly reduced level of complexity whilst newer rhythms are pulled into the mix, allowing relatively short 3 to 4 minutes tunes to be made. With the exception of Everything Everything, so far I find the music a bit hit/miss in catching my attention, so I'm relatively disappointed because of some lack of development/change through whole albums. (I must admit I like the first two tunes on School of Language's album). Having not seen these bands live, I wonder if tune development is left for their gigs. Comments please. BTW One of the few respondents at PE suggested Field Music was the band which best typified this genre(?) and their album Measure was ordered today.

I have to thank Sid Smith for alerting me to Everything Everything (who I can keep going back to), via one of his excellent reviews at his Yellow Room blog. Interesting Sid  suggests The Mars Volta and even KC as influences which I've so far failed to hear, while instead I hear a 21st century pop rock, with a liberal helping of a cut down variant of  Gentle Giant ringing in my ears.

How well does these various forms of prog pop work with other folks here? Any other related bands I should sample?

They have a lot of live recordings in excellent quality on their YouTube channel, I suggest those. It's great to see them play. From their studio albums I only heard the latest one, which was a major disappointment; I don't recommend it.

One progressive genre that often crosses over into indie-pop is math-rock. One good example is Fang Island, who started as a math-rock band then turned to a more accessible indie-pop similar to that of Vampire Weekend, but still progressive up to a certain extent:

Foals is an indie band that often crosses into full math-rock:

Speaking of math-rock, it's nice to see that PA is finally acknowledging New Wave. We now have New Wave bands in Prog-Related, alongside their fully progressive continuations (like the Talking Heads + 80s King Crimson or Japan + David Sylvian pairs).

well, it's called "crossover" prog in PA. Basically that "crossover" is a synonym of pop, but for some reason no one dared using the word "pop" for this subgenre. Oh wait, there is also the "related" appended to prog, which is also a synonym of pop I believe.

Crossover isn't all that pop.  Some of the artists have most certainly achieved popular success.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

^ Pop = popular music, which covers quite a wide range but usually pop = commercial.  I guess pop prog could be crossover prog, as mentioned above, if they were rock.   Here in Greece we have a genre of music known as "entechna" which literally means "art" music.  This is a more technical arty form of pop, rock or folk music and fits the description pop prog quite well.  It typically has some progressive elements (though rarely enough to be considered 100% prog and included in the archives of this site) but not necessarily rock.  It's pop - popular - in the sense that it enjoys some commercial success but of good quality and not without artistic merit.  Here are couple of examples.  See what you think.

Orfeas Peridis - Metaphisiko

Apostolos Rizos - Enas Kyknos Klaiei (his first album, with the same title, IMHO is quite proggy - it could almost make it into crossover prog)

I like what I've heard of Everything Everything.

I could hear some Gentle Giant in there, and perhaps some Belew era King Crimson too. A very good band.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
