Seconded. Also the last Pierre Moerlen's Gong album, Pentanine, appears to have all Russian musicians aside from Pierre. |

I'm not very well-versed in Russian music either, but if you're leaning away from metal I'd like to recommend a few folk bands we've added recently that are pretty interesting:
The first one is pretty mellow while Rada & the Blackthorn have a touch of punk leanings at times. Their later stuff gets a bit poppish so I'd recommend trying their earlist albums first. Czesław Niemen was a Pole who grew up in Belorussia during the Soviet era. Most of his stuff is jazzy and avant with Polish folk leanings, but his Russian-language 'Russische Lieder' is worth checking out.for the Russian folk even if I personally find it to be one of the weaker albums in his overall discography. Also can't resist mentioning Alina Simone's 'Everyone is Calling out to me, Beware'. Not prog, but this is an album of cover tunes from the Russian punk folkist Yanka Dyagileva. Absolutely gorgeous songs sung in Russian, mostly acoustic with tasteful touches of brass in just the right places. Infinitely sad, but then again I've found most Russian music to be that anyway. I can't believe Svetino hasn't wandered by yet - when he does he'll give you plenty of recommendations for sure...

Horizont's 'summer in town', sort of RIO crossed with symphonic prog
and not russian but ukrainian, Roksana (Vikaluk)'s 'Barwy' (colours in polish) is an ambient-folk album, somewhat similar to Lisa Gerrard's solo stuff. She seems to have collaborated with Jozef Skrzek of SBB.
