Hello, I'm new here.

My first record must've been a Beatles... "Love songs" I think.

My first "contemporary" record was "Let's Dance" by Bowie.

My first progressive was The Lamb (although I didn't know anything about progressive rock.

I bought Sparks - Propaganda; Queen - Sheer heart Attack; Bad Company - Straight Shooter; Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti; & Genesis - The Lamb, all during the same holiday ('74, I think) in NYC. I turned 14 that summer, and my father gave me my first (officially sanctioned) can of beer to celebrate the occasion. It was Bud -- my tastes in music and beer have evolved/widened since, but I still like those albums (even the BC, for straightforward R&R). Budweiser is swill, though....

ITCOTCK was my first prog record i listened to. I don't know what "intrigued" means.... please explain

To revive an old thread ….. an Introduction and a ramble

My “Beginnings” :-  Music was on regularly in my childhood house. My dad had a fairly limited range of things he would listen to. So I was brought up listening to the Beatles catalogue, followed by Mcartney/Wings and Lennon solo stuff. A bit of Dylan, and God help me – Leonard Cohen.  My own musical tastes started in a low key way. In around 1977 (10 years old) I heard ELO’s Mr Blue Sky on the radio. Being in the fortunate position of having a few quid birthday money in pocket I bought my 1^st record - the Out of the Blue album, and became hooked. Little beginnings. As teenage years began, and still totally unaware and oblivious of “prog” I remember buying the Phil Collins single “In the air tonight”. A friend  accompanying me at the time suggested I listen to Genesis. So I bought Abacab. Being naïve and ignorant at the time I assumed this to be “The Genesis”, this, I thought, was their sound and what they were all about. Whilst I enjoyed the album, it didn’t blow my socks off. Later that year someone lent me Yes's “Close to the Edge” on tape. So, away I went, pressed play, listened and thought “what the **** is this rubbish”. Ejected it and went back to listening reliable safe ELO , Genesis and of course The Beatles (Not Mr Leonard C though). Then, a few weeks later, being off school with the flu or something, I stuck CTTE on again, for what reason I am not sure. There was no “road to Damascus” moment there and then, but little bits of melody here and there got me interested. So , I persevered . Then , bang, it hit me. Wow, this was music. To me it was like a whole new world, unbelievable. Everything else I’d listened to up to that point simply wasn’t in the same league.  After that I was insatiable, I couldn’t listen to CTTE enough, and wanted more so every penny I got went towards LP purchases. I can still remember back then the excitement of buying a different and new (to me) Yes record. The feeling that I was about to hear something for the 1^st time and “knowing” that I would love it. As years have passed, other bands have “hit me” as well, although not with quite the same force. Bands such as Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and the “real” Genesis.

         So there I am, approaching middle age, still loving my music and content with myself for having conquered all and found all the best of prog. Then I find this site, see people with a similar, but much wider taste in music, and doubts set in :- Hmm, maybe I am not all seeing after all, maybe King Crimson, for example, are not just the band that poached Yes’s drummer and maybe they “did some good stuff” too. So I ordered 3 Crimson albums –Red, Larks Tongues.., and ITCOTCK, and I’m very very glad I did. Some great stuff, and the amazing thing is, is that feeling, that thrill of listening to something for the 1^st time and loving it is back. So a big thanks to this site, and all its’ members for giving me the nudge I needed. 

I think the first tape I bought with my own money was... Real Love by the Beatles (It was a single in the early 90's).

As with The-Bullet, I grew up on all that stuff, except Leonard Cohen... thank god!

Geese, really date myself here.  First three albums I purchased all within 30 days of each other when I was 13:

1. The Doors -Debut

2. Bob Dylans Greatest hits vol 1

3. Jimi Hendrix Experience Are you Experienced (I remember my mom (rip) looking at that album cover and her exact words were What is that? )

My brother and I purchased Sgt Peppers prior to this jointly and since he took it then it doesn''t count as my first one.  He had Jefferson Airplane, Frank Zappa, Iron Butterfly and King Crimson among others by the time he moved out with my dad when my parents divorced.
