Hello, I'm new here.
My first record must've been a Beatles... "Love songs" I think.
My first "contemporary" record was "Let's Dance" by Bowie.
My first progressive was The Lamb (although I didn't know anything about progressive rock.

I'm afraid my first CD was a compilation of house music (I grew up in the nineties you know), but that was just when I was beginning to whow interest for music, I think I was 12 years old and house was the hype. I think my second album was Pablo Honey from Radiohead.

Ian Hunter - Ian Hunter (the album with Once Bitten Twice Shy)
Sparks - Kimono My House
QUOTE]
Right on! Classic Hoople/Hunter & Sparks = GOOD FUN!
I bought Sparks - Propaganda; Queen - Sheer heart Attack; Bad Company - Straight Shooter; Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti; & Genesis - The Lamb, all during the same holiday ('74, I think) in NYC. I turned 14 that summer, and my father gave me my first (officially sanctioned) can of beer to celebrate the occasion. It was Bud -- my tastes in music and beer have evolved/widened since, but I still like those albums (even the BC, for straightforward R&R). Budweiser is swill, though....

Wow! Your first Prog album was "The Lamb..."? That's....quite a start!
Just out of curiousity, did anyone here (without knowing about Prog) just stumble across King Crimson's debut and find themselves totally intrigued? (In particular, did anyone remember discovering it when it first came out?)

Unfortunately, John came fifth and was stuck with a toaster.

^ Intrigued = Piqued your curiousity, aroused your interest, caught your attention, appealed to you.
On that album, also one of my firsts of the genre, it was Schizoid Man that first appealed to my hitherto hard-rocking tastes.

To revive an old thread ….. an Introduction and a ramble
My “Beginnings” :- Music was on regularly in my childhood house. My dad had a fairly limited range of things he would listen to. So I was brought up listening to the Beatles catalogue, followed by Mcartney/Wings and Lennon solo stuff. A bit of Dylan, and God help me – Leonard Cohen. My own musical tastes started in a low key way. In around 1977 (10 years old) I heard ELO’s Mr Blue Sky on the radio. Being in the fortunate position of having a few quid birthday money in pocket I bought my 1st record - the Out of the Blue album, and became hooked. Little beginnings. As teenage years began, and still totally unaware and oblivious of “prog” I remember buying the Phil Collins single “In the air tonight”. A friend accompanying me at the time suggested I listen to Genesis. So I bought Abacab. Being naïve and ignorant at the time I assumed this to be “The Genesis”, this, I thought, was their sound and what they were all about. Whilst I enjoyed the album, it didn’t blow my socks off. Later that year someone lent me Yes's “Close to the Edge” on tape. So, away I went, pressed play, listened and thought “what the **** is this rubbish”. Ejected it and went back to listening reliable safe ELO , Genesis and of course The Beatles (Not Mr Leonard C though). Then, a few weeks later, being off school with the flu or something, I stuck CTTE on again, for what reason I am not sure. There was no “road to Damascus” moment there and then, but little bits of melody here and there got me interested. So , I persevered . Then , bang, it hit me. Wow, this was music. To me it was like a whole new world, unbelievable. Everything else I’d listened to up to that point simply wasn’t in the same league. After that I was insatiable, I couldn’t listen to CTTE enough, and wanted more so every penny I got went towards LP purchases. I can still remember back then the excitement of buying a different and new (to me) Yes record. The feeling that I was about to hear something for the 1st time and “knowing” that I would love it. As years have passed, other bands have “hit me” as well, although not with quite the same force. Bands such as Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and the “real” Genesis.
So there I am, approaching middle age, still loving my music and content with myself for having conquered all and found all the best of prog. Then I find this site, see people with a similar, but much wider taste in music, and doubts set in :- Hmm, maybe I am not all seeing after all, maybe King Crimson, for example, are not just the band that poached Yes’s drummer and maybe they “did some good stuff” too. So I ordered 3 Crimson albums –Red, Larks Tongues.., and ITCOTCK, and I’m very very glad I did. Some great stuff, and the amazing thing is, is that feeling, that thrill of listening to something for the 1st time and loving it is back. So a big thanks to this site, and all its’ members for giving me the nudge I needed. I am enjoying the exploration, and long may the journey continue...

I think the first tape I bought with my own money was... Real Love by the Beatles (It was a single in the early 90's).
As with The-Bullet, I grew up on all that stuff, except Leonard Cohen... thank god!

The first record album I ever purchased was Songs
From The Wood by Jethro Tull. My brother was a Tull
fan and I'd seen the album and was amused by the
cover artwork (especially the back cover photo of the
turntable/treestump). I instantly fell in love with it.
Interestingly enough, this was also my wife's first
album purchase too!

Geese, really date myself here. First three albums I purchased all within 30 days of each other when I was 13:
1. The Doors -Debut
2. Bob Dylans Greatest hits vol 1
3. Jimi Hendrix Experience Are you Experienced (I remember my mom (rip) looking at that album cover and her exact words were What is that? )
My brother and I purchased Sgt Peppers prior to this jointly and since he took it then it doesn''t count as my first one. He had Jefferson Airplane, Frank Zappa, Iron Butterfly and King Crimson among others by the time he moved out with my dad when my parents divorced.

I am almost 19. I started liking music when I was 9. That makes it about 1995 or 1996 when I bought my first CD. As ashamed as I am to admit it, the very first album I bought was a Boyz II Men tape. I realize that is very sad but you gotta cut me a break, I was nine. But that was not the end of my bad taste. Noooooooooo. Before I came to my senses and started liking good music like Led Zeppelin, Yes, or ELP, I was destined to waste money on a Spice Girls tape, the Hanson ('member them?) MMMBop single, and several Backstreet Boys and NSync tapes. Geeez! I wish I could have that $40 back! Well, as it turns out, I raided my closet a couple years ago and got rid of those skeletons. Now I have a CD and tape collection that I am more proud of. My first prog record were actually two records. I bought the Highlights greatest hits album by Yes and the Chonicles compilation by Rush. My music teacher recommended both bands to me.

The first "album" i bought was a compilation cassette of 60's songs
called "Tour Of Duty" in 1990. I was 10 years old then and had
not yet developed my musical interests (actually, it's still evolving).
There were some reall goods songs on that cassette I stil like to hear :
Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
Cream - White Room
Moody Blues - Tuesday Afternoon
Fleetwood Mac - Albatros
not bad for a 10 year old.
3 or 4 years later I bought my first compact disc, a remaster of Queen
I. A beautifull album, i even used one song "the night comes down" for
an audition to a theatre group in school.

The first album I bought myself was Genesis - Live.
However my sister had given me Genesis - Wind And Wuthering a couple of months previously.
Oh well at least I've got something to thank her for.

Metallica's Black Album. I was ten and for the first month or so I just kept replaying 'Enter Sandman'. It took about three months fot me to get as far as 'Whenever I May Roam'. The whole thing just seemed so long then...
