"Nine Feet Underground" also has a pretty good ending, even if it is a "Sunshine of Your Love" ripoff. But it fits very well into the musical context.
And I have to say "Cassandra Geminni" has a fantastic ending, with the orchestra, the final climactic explosion, and the sudden end. "Heart of the Sunrise" also manages to pull off the sudden ending very well.

The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe.

Shine on you crazy diamond - Parts 7-whatever. What an ending! As a previous reviewer said, a good fade always works.

Musical Box all the way, after the powerfull Touch me vocal section, all the band does a grand finalle in the most classical symphonic style. Perfect.

Agreed!
Another good fadeout is on Pink Floyd's "Sheep", which leads nicely into Pigs on the Wing II.

fades out make me mad!
IMO, Learning to Live has a quite tremendous solo epilogue, but the fade out cuts down Mike's drum culminating . That is why I listen to the Live Scenes from NY version.
The last Tarkus solo part (from, dunno, the 17th minute or so) is great. A nice marching rhythm, and, again, live it's just spectacular.
As for Genesis, the Musical Box's ending just cannot cope with his goosebumping (if this word exists) intro. Return of the Giant Hogweed has a great ending though.
Too many to count on, anyway...

You should listen to 'to bid you farewell' from Opeth's Morningrise.
Oh my God, it's the last song of the album and it leaves you dead...
There is a perfect melodic part with vocals and you expect it will continue...
...but it doesn't....
what a shame....
First time I listened to it, I could not believe it. Damn......

So do I! But then, "In the Wake..." is strongly reminiscent of "Epitaph", whose ending is absolutely wonderful. I also like the ending to "Siberian Khatru" and, of course, the mighty "Tarkus".

I'll throw in another couple of Yes tracks - Release Release (single bass note) and Parallels.
To slip into non-prog mode for a moment, the live version of Freebird is the most epic ending ever (I think it lasts about 3 minutes), I also like "I Want You" from Abbey Road, it just cuts out. And how about Rainbow's "Do you close your eyes"?

The end of Faaip de Oaid on lateraus it has a brief few seconds pause then you have a frantic, worried voice telling or spilling the beans on the possible Roswell cover up superb or possibly war of the wolrds where you have NASA talking to either a ship or another space station and one guy sees some green mist coming out of mars and he starts cracking up and his signal is finally lost with a worried NASA franticlly trying to recover his signal...freaky endings or what!?

What do you think is the best ending of a prog song?
For me it's:
Genesis - The Musical Box. It's so dramatic, beautiful, and an outstanding
arrangement. Works so well because the ending part is so different than the
rest of the song. It's even more dramatic to WATCH LIVE. Gabriel is insane
but its just... Mind blowing... |
Excellent choice. I would either say the Musical box or Supper's Ready, I
absolutely love the "as sure as eggs" ending. The emotions are everywhere.

From reading most of the above replies, I can gather that most of you think that only Symphonic Prog bands can have good endings to songs.
Anyone care to prove me wrong?
