Well, I've been exploring progressive metal for quite sometime now, and if there is one thing I've noticed it's that the bassists in these wonderful bands seldom get a mention. This is a shame really, because there are some really talented guys out there that contribute MASSIVELY to the music (behind all the very prominent guitar and drum work). So I decided to dedicate a thread to recognising prog metal bassists in all their glory.
The first one that pops to mind almost instantly is Steve DiGiorgio out of Death from Human to ITP. Astonishing player and brought the fretless into metal. Oh, and it's also worth noting that i'll be handing out 10 ProgArchives pounds to anyone who doesn't mention John Myung

Sean Malone is probably my favorite, but admittedly my exposure is quite limited.
edit: just noticed this was in "Top 10" - I doubt I could come up with half that many. ![]() Edited by NaturalScience - February 10 2009 at 11:55 |

I quite like Symphony X bassists, Thomas Miller and Michael Lepond, both are very skilled
and have warm sounding (that kind of sound Chris Squire established, I use to call it "the
wooden touch").Colin Edwin from Porcupine Tree is another guy to put some attention on,
his contribution to the band itīs outstanding when they come to soundscapes he is always
keeping the overall structure and allowing Steve Wilson and Richard Barbieri to deliver that
pleasant passages.
Other Iīve become big fan is Dave Meros from Spockīs Beard, just for the "wooden touch" again
, he quite reminds me of the classic bassists sound (well, we all know what SB is about).
Please, send 10 PA pound as soon as possible

But he's been doing that sort with Niacin for a lot longer and far more albums. Then there is the guesting with Steve Vai:

Definitely one of my favorite bassists of all time, though I'd have a hard time calling a guy who is most well known for collaborating with Michael Hedges a prog metal bassist ![]() I have to give my appreciation to Joey Vera, perhaps best known as bassist of Armored Saint (not prog) and Fates Warning (prog). I call him the Tony Levin of metal in that he always plays the right parts and rarely plays more that the right parts. Big inspiration to my playing. |
