I'm an American (even though some people don't consider California to be part of the U.S.). During my album purchasing days I favored European music over American music and my collection reflects that.
But, I'm willing to admit that I may possibly have overlooked some good bands and I expect some of you to correct this oversight.
I'll start with bands I did not overlook and you can take it from there.
Electromagnets
Crack The Sky
Ethos
Pavlov's Dog
Fire Ballet
Starcastle

I have a big list of interesting bands from America that I could show here. But I would like to make you a question before: When you talk about "American Prog?", are you considering the whole American Continent (ya know: Central America & South America too), or just only North American bands???
I tell you this because here in Europe we often see how (in the films, magazines, news...), people in U.S.A. call their country just like "America" (what isn´t correct), and perhaps if I put on here a list of bands from Uruguay, Argentina, etc etc...(there were excellent bands) maybe it won´t be what you were looking for. I´m confused about your requests...
Just for clearing up my doubts.
Thanx.
Cheers,
Sergio.

Unfortunately, here in the US there is this tendency to refer to the country as 'America' , forgetting that we're talking about a much bigger continent. So, I am sure the original intention was to refer to US prog.

The country is called the UNITED STATES of America, not America... Trust me, I live here . It would be like calling Italy or France Europe.

I didn't see that Iluvatar was mentioned. Also, Discipline and Cryptic Vision should mentioned, too.

In Canada we all refer to people in the U.S. as Americans, maybe it's unique to our country. We're called Canadians so we have to call you guys Americans 'cause United Statesians just doesn't sound right.

In France as well, if you say "l'Amérique" (America) everyone knows you are talking about the USA. And "les Américains" (Americans) is the most common term to qualify US inhabitants.

Hey, I've always thought it a tad bit arrogant that most of us US Americans go around calling ourselves America. Just think of it as a nickname. After all, no other country in this hemisphere has America as part of their country name. And I'll take no offense if you just refer to us as gringos. Gringo Norte Americanos anyone? What's really also kind of funny this hemisphere takes it's name from an Italian, Amerigo Vespucci. Although according to Wiki, there's some dispute about whether or not that's valid. But that's what I was taught at some point in history class.

Well no it wouldn't. France is not called "United States Of Europe" America as called "United States Of America".
The clue is in the title.

Hi,
The sad thing about any prog in America is that it's success is limited ... with top ten ruling the air waves and things like Sirius being just another AM station and glorifying hits to ensure that ASCAP/BMI get paid, the chance of a lot of these other bands making it is very tough ...
And this is the reason why some of these bands do so well in other countries, like The Rocket Scientists do great in Japan and Europe ... but in 1999 in SF when they played their hearts out at the Music Festival, people were not interested because they came to see Brand X and Porcupine Tree that night ... and they were prepared, good, and in my book put on a fabulous show ... talk about professionalism ... it's really hard to beat that ... it really is ... there is not much more that you can ask of a band.
America is too much top ten oriented ... and it's really sad when really good people like this, and many others, are ignored ...

I agree that America is and has long been top ten oriented. Fortunately, I have enough "non commercial" music to listen to.
Although I am out of touch with the music of today, I saw a lot of bands "make it" in the sixties and seventies and that was a tough market.
I honestly don't know what it would take for a new band to "break into" todays music scene.

The two bands I mentioned in my previous post, Cathedral & Yezda Urfa, were virtually ignored in the US also...

The official name is "The United States of America" so that means calling us Americans is proper for both the country and the continent. Our founding Fathers were already spinning copyrights and trademarks.
BTW to refer to an earlier post there are two continents called America North and South not one.
Most of the the US bands have been listed but I didn't see Helmet of Gnats a great fusion band out of Conneticutt. Also Enchant from the bay area with a little prog metal.
