Unfortunately Genesis doesn't have a true classic live album. "Genesis Live" is too short and only features songs from two of the four classically lined up albums. "Seconds Out" does not have Peter Gabriel's vocals. The other three I won't even comment because it's from the pop era. I will vote for Seconds Out.
A band as important as Genesis deserved a big and long live album on the level of "Yessongs", "A Live Record" (Camel), "Bursting Out", "Playing the Fool" (Gentle Giant), "Real Time" ( VDGG), "Live and Let Live" (Twelfth Night), "Space Ritual" (Hawkwind), "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends" (ELP), Uriah Heep Live, and others.

The one I like most is the live recording at the Rainbow from the archived box set. From this list I prefer the earliest which would have been even better if they had included "Supper's Ready" from the same concert. Unfortunately Genesis get progressively worse with each live concert over the years, which Genesis fans don't care to admit. From the 1987 concert tour onwards where the band decided to perform a medley of tunes from the earlier albums was the final straw for me. The latest tour is a complete travesty of what was once was a great band, a purely money making exercise. Phil Collins has more sense than the other two to want to do the concert tour. I assume he did it to help out the career of his son, who is a really good drummer. Contrast that to Neil Finn who does a new Crowded House tour with both his sons trying a new more updated take on the songs. I wish Genesis had called it quits after 1987. They're not the band I grew up to love and admire as a teenager.

I'm not sure. Genesis Live should take it for being the one with the Genesis classic tracks, yet it's an incomplete show... and I believe they left out most of my favourite tracks that they actually did play. Live at the Rainbow is much better for me (which I have because I have the live boxed set)... I like their performance better, and it's got the songs missing from Genesis Live. And Seconds Out should be another contender, but somehow it's also missing too many songs that I love, and the mixing could have been better (Hackett's guitar is a bit low in the mix). I don't miss Gabriel's voice, on the contrary, it's what I like better on this one, for I prefer Collins singing over him (even if I obviously prefer the songs from Gabriel's era), but I do miss his flute (if only they had taken, say, Hackett's brother as a session musician for the tour to play the flute). Oh yes, and I wish they had included on all the album tracks taken with Bill Bruford on Drums.

I haven't had a turntable in decades, so it has been that long since I heard Live. I'll have to fix that. Seconds Out and Three Side Live are both stunning. So is The Longs, as long as you like the Old Medley. I don't pay much attention to The Shorts but it is a good listen if you want the later hits mixed with a few shorter, rockier songs. Finally, Live Over Europe which has excellent sound (especially TB's keys), but time has robbed them a bit of their skill. Still a very good listen. My wish list would have Genesis go back into the archives, clean up and release some whole shows from the 76-80 tours. Voted for Three Sides Live

' Live' is a fantastic taste of the band, recorded and mixed with a powerful raw-ness which really showed what they were capable of as a live unit; it is however (as many have already said) an incomplete recording which could have been so, so much more with Suppers ready (as per the proposed double version and the numerous bootlegs) and , say, Twighlight Alehouse.
The Bootleg 'White Mountain' which is from the 'Trick' tour with Bill Bruford on drums is a great document and excellent sound quality. There are lots of very interesting Live Bootlegs from 72-77 of varying sound qualities.. luckily Genesis dont seem to be worried about them being out there.. unlike some bands! Also the Live at Shepperton sound studios 73 (now its been more cleaned up) is as good a document of the band at its peak as any but the Rainbow gig is equally cool.. I went through a phase of finding Seconds Out a bit wishy-washy sound wise; Steve Hackett feels so mixed out that its almost the void that his guitar would occupy that is most noticeable to me. However i have returned to it in recent years (and with a new deck, amp, speakers) and have really enjoyed it and found that perhaps my bias was influenced by comments made at the time that SH's guitar was deliberately mixed down due to him leaving at that time. The 2019 half speed remaster certainly has more colour and oomph in it than my original vinyl versions.

I'll argue for Seconds Out. It may not have Peter on it, but Steve is still there and Phil is killing it all the way through. Has tons of their best stuff, including a full live Supper's Ready, which is just phenomenal. Plus Afterglow hits so much harder live than it does on the album.
Live is also great, though not having Supper's Ready even though it was part of the set seems like a misstep, and the production is a bit on the rough side. Peter is wonderful of course, and the energy in those performances is electric. Three Sides Live is also great if you care for pop Genesis at all. Phil was killing it on Seconds Out, but he hadn't yet fully found his voice on that album. Three Sides Live sees Phil at possibly his peak vocal performance. There's not a missed opportunity for him to impress. The band is super tight as well, being now closer to a power trio than ever (although not technically being one, but feeling more like one). And if you only care for prog Genesis, I defy you to say anything bad about the medley on side 3. Possibly the best single cut from any of these live albums. Haven't really checked out the others. I did see the Last Domino tour a few months ago, and I loved it. Domino in particular really stood out to me, but the band was hot all night, and Phil sounded great.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

If Genesis had called it quits then, then I would never have gotten to see them, and I imagine many others as well, so I for one am extremely thankful for everything up through the last tour. Even if I don't love all of it, even if it's not quite up to the level of their early years, it's still one of the greatest bands ever continuing to do what they're so great at. Nothing to complain about keeping on keeping on.

Spot on! I did get to see them in 77, 78 and 87 but I really wished I had seen them this time around.

You mean John Hackett was there to help filling in flute when Steve Hackett was auditioning for Genesis, or John Hackett auditioned to fill Peter Gabriel's flute parts when he left? |

I’m usually a sucker for a great live album and oftentimes prefer live takes over studio ones…but I never reach for any of the live albums by Genesis that I own. I’d rather listen to the studio albums.
Maybe I should remedy that. As of yet I have no real vote. |

It has to be Genesis Live for me, the second album I ever bought and my first prog album. Shame it doesn't have Supper's Ready on it but it was a budget release (£1.99 if I remember rightly) so they couldn't make it a double album. Still brilliant though.
