lol thanks for the factoid, Borat!

actually the fact that the male brain is larger than the female one has more to do with the size of the cranium; the average male simply has a bigger skull than the average female, though the difference in size is not as drastic as it is for example with the great apes or early hominids. the size difference of the human brain regarding to gender is rather minimal. by the way: microchips are smaller than transistors too. and do you know why? they are more effective

My other half isn't a fan of prog. There are a few things she likes (e.g. Marillion) but mostly she'll be happy listening to local radio.
Occasionally she'll ask what I'm playing but that's so she can file it in the part of her brain labelled "music I can't stand."
She sometimes surprises me though. I was playing A Meal You Can Shake Hands With in the Dark by Pete Brown and his Battered Ornaments the other day, she said it was OK but didn't like the spoken parts. High praise indeed!

What I've noticed though, is that girls like music that is more piano-rock oriented, almost all of 'em that I know have that kind of stuff on their Ipods.

This is how I get to find out how many female candidates are out there. You are all obviously on the same proggy wave length! Triumvirat(e)?

Maybe except Magma, none of my favorite progressive bands features
any dungeons or dragons (or Rick Wakeman). But then again I know plenty
of chicks into prog.

That's because brain size is proportional to overall bodyweight!
But women also attach more emotional retrival tags to their memories....maybe that's why they'll always associate prog with nerds, because they'll always remember the nerd who tried to explain the plot behind Tarkus in high school.
Oh wait, that nerd was me...

sorry, i choked...i wanted to quote this post
and also...there are very few females involved in rock music, so no female role models and stuff...

Prog rock is mostly cerebral music, I think that is the answer. Women mostly prefer emotional music, and prefer it to stuff that needs absrtact thinking (or listening)... For example, My girlfriend enjoys in good music... But she would always take Smooth Jazz before Fusion, which is more complex (in abstract way). Or Pop Rock instead Progressive sound (Even if she likes some melodies in original. Example: she likes oriental sound in original, but dislike it in composition "Saucers" by Ozric Tentacles)... For the end, brains of men and women are so different that that is amazing...

That kind of change makes no sense at all. Are you sure she hasn't been replaced by a zombie c & w pod person?

Seen the amount of stereotypes in this thread, I'd like to ask you all a question... How do you explain people like me, the Baldies or other women who are heavily into prog? Are we freaks of nature, or what? Or perhaps some so-called rules only exist in order to have exceptions?

I am one of the resident "chicks who love prog". My first prog album was bought at the age of 11. Though I am very well aware of the biological differences between men and women, I tend to resent any kind of generalisation relating to those differences - especially as regards brain size and such.
As to the matter of emotion vs intellectualism, I have never felt that prog was devoid of emotion, or that mainstream love songs were full of it. On the contrary, I find the latter's sentimentalism quite fake, while something like "Epitaph" or "Starless" really touches a chord within me. I may be an exception, but I am not so sure... It's just that I have always tended to think with my own brain (smaller or otherwise), instead of letting myself be brainwashed by what society thinks a woman should be like. |
I agree! Women are not less intellectual than men. There are more women in Law School and Medical School than men nowadays (at least in the states). Incidentally, I've only met one other person who likes prog and I know alot of people. My husband doesn't like it at all. He likes some Porcupine Tree and some Rush but cannot stand The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard or Gentle Giant.
As to why so few women like prog - I would say that its because so few people do in general and women just aren't socialized to really like music that much except as background filler or as something to dance to.
As to some of the posts about women liking pop/dance music more - I'm guessing you're younger and when you are a teenager/twentysomething - you tend to care more about what other people think of you (I'm talking about the females you know in your own age group) but when you get older you (hopefully) don't care at all about what other's think and will admit to liking something even if it is supposedly deemed "nerdy".
