Well, Tony R, I think it's clear - your services are no longer necessary in this forum.  Please hand in your prog credentials to the secretary at the front, and let's try to do this without a scene, shall we?  WinkLOL

I've never met any "classic" prog bands that I didn't like at all, but some have held my interest far longer than others.   Though I still like Snow Goose, I quickly cooled on the other Camel albums I own (Mirage and Moonmadnees).  I thought Camel was so great, and there are still songs of those other albums I really like, but on the whole it now sounds a little boring to me.   In fact, I was bored somewhat by The Snow Goose the first time I tried it, unlike Mirage and Moonmadness, so not surprising that it still appeals to me more.  Caravan is another band I got into not too long ago in a big way, and though I still like much of their stuff, it now seems to be lacking 'greatness'.

Both bands I got into immediately, but they don't hold my attention.  Hatfield and The North, for instance, took me longer to get into, but has stayed fresh for me longer.

Ultimately I like somewhat, personally, challenging music -- if something takes me a little while longer to "get" (which is usually not very long at all -- two listens perhaps) then it's more likely that I'll like it longer.  If I hate something at first listen then I usually don't bother with the music again.  I won't waste my time with such personally distasteful stuff when I know there's so much, as yet personally undiscovered stuff out there to catch my fancy.  Just because I don't "get it" certiainly doesn't mean it's not good though -- occasionally I've caught just a whiff of musical 'greatness' that has meant that I'd make a concerted effort to understand and appreciate (especially in non-prog stuff).

Mahavishnu Orchestra is a good example of a band that took me  a little while to realy like -- at least two listens, although even at first listen I hardly disliked it -- but I now lovve.  It took a little time for the music to adequately penetrate my brain.
Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Hang on,since when have Yes and Genesis not counted among the Classic Prog Bands?
Not only are these two amongst my favourite bands, I have also seen both live during their golden eras, how many of you lot can say that?
LOL

I tend to prefer Symphonic Prog and as far as I know VDGG,Gentle Giant,King Crimson and Jethro Tull are not Symphonic Prog bands.

Oh and Sean Trane; listening to Living In the Past,The Witches Promise,Songs From The Wood and Aqualung and all I can envisage is demonic morris dancers prancing to some neo-Elizabethan handkerchief-waving nonesense.Jethro Tull? Its more New Romantic then Prog Rock...

.............I bet they are dying to cover "Prince Charming"Wink

oh and I support Man Utd and have done since 1970.Tongue

Any famous prog bands that you should like, but simply don't?

Of the major prog bands who I have listened to extensively:

King Crimson do nothing for me as a whole. Yes, I like odd tracks, who wouldnt with a band with such an extensive catalogue. However because they are part of the Classic Prog scene I always feel slightly guilty for not appreciating them.

ELP are a slightly different case for me as initially I liked them but now I have grown up I find them almost unbearably pretentious. I would be embarrassed if a friend walked in on me whilst I was listening to one of their albums!!

Jethro Tull - too "Hey Nonnie Nonnie" for me. I just cannot find one redeeming feature.Their music seems to go nowhere, slowly.

Gentle Giant -
what the heck are they supposed to be? Those bizarre vocal harmonies, and songs about nothing I can understand. No,I have tried and failed to "get" these guys.

VDGG -
eek! A combination of all the above. Hammill's vocal delivery drives me potty, the music is ponderous and dreary. Too "old-fashioned".....?

What a collection of nonsense statements.

What do you like than ?

Can't you take a differing opinion? I see nothing nonsensical about Tony R's views on these bands, and I love all of them, except ELP (whom I like still).

I'm not a big fan of Yes or Genesis, I love the odd song, such as 'And You and I' or 'Supper's Ready', but on the whole Yes tends to sound a bit shallow (with little in the way of a 'toungue-in-cheek' factor to redeem it) and Genesis a bit clumsy.

Also Magma and Can failed to impress me as much as they were supposed to.

No, I don't understand.
There is to much essential prog bands Tony doesn't like.
You can't go to football match every sunday and than said that you dont't like it.

It's simple: I like football, but only what I consider to be football at the highest level, therefore I don't watch the Polish league, for example. And similarly, Tony doesn't watch football teams he doesn't like - he only watches Rush... er, that is Bolton WanderersLOL.

Hahahahaha!!

Music is a very personal thing, and no-one should feel bad because they don't like artists or bands who they maybe feel they should like! We like what we like, and no-one should criticize that, (unless any of us admit to enjoying Brittany Spears! [I apologise to her fans now!])
I personally have never liked ELP, nor been too fussed on King Crimson, Gentle Giant, (although I have only heard the odd track from them,) Echolyn, (I borrowed the album As The World from a friend, and found it strangely pointless), Dream Theater or indeed any of the prog-metal bands, (though I do enjoy Rush immensely, and they have been called prog-metal in the past!). I agree that CTTE is not Yes's best album - I think Fragile, TFTO, Relayer and GFTO are all superior - but I still enjoy CTTE now and again. Basically, as I said, taste is personal, and that is how it should be. We are all on this site because we enjoy a certain genre of music, and that is enough to bring us all together and unite us, and provide us with interesting topics for discussion! Smile

I haven't listened to Yes in ages...I was crazy about them for awhile then that dissapeared...they're still a great band...King Crimson I'm still not over them because they're such a genius band even though Robert Fripp is hard to get along with...I would say give up on them for awhile then come back to them and see what you think of them...

i think yes was more pretentious then ELP. I think ELP were just to good at some moments, however you have to give them credit for being a REALLY PROGRESSIVE rock band

Yes might be pretensious yes...I would agree with that...ELP definetly wasn't pretensious because with a lot of their material they don't go in knowing what they're doing...they seem unsure of themselves in many places but the further you go into the song there seems to be a building confidence...they're also better then Yes Tongue
