When I got divorced, my ex told the judge that one of my alleged crimes was that I loved "drug music" (her unique derogatory term defining prog ), His Honour asked me what were my fave bands so I answered Roxy, KC, Focus, Tull , Genesis etc..... He asked her she said Bryan Adams, disco, Rod Stewart . Turns out he was a Yes and Floyd fan. He immediatly cited her for lack of musical taste and we divorced on amicable terms., telling her :"Your husband has impeccable taste and manners, your loss" Yeah!

Well, i just don't want prog to have the same fame as power metal, widely known for being somehow gay. You guys can put the initial blame on Manowar and its homo-erotic acting / dressing / etc back in the 80's but power metal bands nowadays don't help to improve the genre's fame (except some few exceptions, like Blind Guardian)
|
Blind Guardian? Are you kidding? they're probably the biggest closet cases in the metal scene today. They covered "Mr Sandman" by the Chordettes, and despite changing the lyrics from "he" to "she" to seem less gay, they kept the line "Lots of wavy hair like Liberace". It doesn't get much more homosexual than that.

Are you sure?

Manowar were one of earlier examples of homoeroticism in metal, but they're far from the worst offenders. At least we agree on one thing, there's no denying that metal in all it's forms is the gayest genre of rock music, but I feel that prog should definitely be ranked #2. But unlike you, I don't consider it a bad thing at all. If you like your music completely free of homoeroticism, go listen to some modern country or Ted Nugent.

Prog is not #2 ! In fact it's ridiculous to claim that one genre has a wider gay audience than another ! I have gays acquaintences and they cover the entire spectrum . They are just as distinct in tastes as anyone else. You said modern country? I guess you haven't seen Brokeback Mountain !

/\ what about glam, pop, etc? prog is far from being the second gayest rock sub genre. . . . However, i have nothing against gay people. i was only making a joke (at least trying) . After all, Leonardo Da Vinci was gay. . . . PS: true, there is Brokeback Mountain, hehehehehe

Glam, pop, and dance music, despite having a large following in the gay community, also have a massive appeal to females, which brings them down on the gayness scale.
Prog, on the other hand, is a genre with an overwhelming majority of males in it's fanbase (and a small community of older women/lesbians), flamboyant frontmen prancing around in ridiculous outifts, and a chemistry between band members that could be considered sexual on some level.
For the best example of this, just watch any Arena DVD. Watch the way John Mitchell and Ian Salmon frequently approach one another and stare into each other's eyes, and the chemistry between Mick and Clive in the interviews(they're like an old married couple). Their frontman tromps around the stage wearing a leather trenchcoat, multiple dog collars, and neon green visors, all accessories that you would find at a gay pride event, and singing about "men raped and discarded" and how his "rainbows turned to grey".
I'm not accusing any prog artists of being gay (although there are a few examples, such as Kings X's bassist/vocalist), but you simply cannot deny that it's one of the gayest genres of music today.

I don't think prog is too high on the gay scale. If it were, my wife would be totally into it.

Uh...Did you post that in the wrong window? It doesn't make any sense. Yes, I know what it's referring to.

You make a very good point. Peter Gabriel isn't gay, but it's hard to call dressing up as a flower straight.
Good thing RIO doesn't have that problem. ;-)

Over the past 23 years together my wife has endured a vast barrage of Prog, Jazz and Rock. Even this past week driving in the car she was subjected to my usual pop quiz of "what band is this"? She answered this weeks question easily, of course it was Pink Floyd. She does quite well.
My wife can identify Yes, King Crimson, ELP, The Who, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Frank Zappa, Genesis ( and wether it is Peter or Phil singing) and quite a few other bands. I've taken her to see Yes numerous times and we're taking our kids to see them this tour in Columbus. We've also seen Genesis, ELP, Moody Blues, The Who, Jethro Tull, Peter Gabriel, Kansas and Chick Corea.
I have no complaints with the wife's prog appreciation. I'll keep her another 23 years I guess.

Ain't that the pure undiluted truth! Fag hags , I believe they were called then . Their mission in life is to convert gay strays back to 'normalcy" , Florence bloody Nightingales!
Back in the 70-80s , when "androgene" was in, (AKA the hair -era) , every guy that was hip to get laid had to have a Duran look! Whether he was gay or not!

But bears are ferocious and terrifying and thus far more manly! Even Stephen Colbert isn't afraid of flowers.

I second the question. Don't see any problem with any "MILF".
