The case for Hugh seemed to be lost, but now is nosing up a bit. I'm going to vote for him, I love the sound of that string section. Minnear may be a more complex and unique musician, however

Hugh McDowell is the better cellist and, as has already been pointed out, his cello was an integral part of ELO.

I much prefer GG to ELO, and Kerry Minnear is a massively talented multi instrumentalist who also co-wrote GG's best material, but judged purely in terms of the cello it has to be Hugh McDowell.
