I was just wondering this. If there is any psychedelic jazz out there, I'd like to hear it, (provided its good).

Can anyone name a psychedelic jazz artist off the top of their head?

what im going to list can be considered different types of jazz, but for this thread's sake, im assuming you mean "Jazz I can trip out to" or psychedelic jazz

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
Miles Davis - Big Fun
Herbie Hancock - Mwandishi
Herbie Hancock - Crossings
Herbie Hancock - Sextant
Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda
Medeski Martin & Wood - Friday Afternoon in the Universe

that's all i can think of off the top of my head

Easy Money (John) must see this thread, he seems to be an expert of this style of jazz, or at least a big fan, myself I can recommend:

Miles Davis - Get Up With It
Miles Davis - Pangaea

Speak of the devil ... psychedelic jazz is probably my favorite style, go through my reviews and you will find lots.
The best is probably early to mid 70s Miles and Hancock's Sextet. Also early Passport, any fusion album with Larry Young as guest or some things that aren't on PA like select albums by Donald Byrd, Ramsey Lewis and Herbie Mann.

what comes to mind for this is the first two Colosseum albums "Those Who Are About To Die Salute You" and "Valentyne Suite"
And all of Passport's many albums are musical blessings!

interesting because the term 'psychedelic jazz' doesn't seem to have the defined boarders other subgenres tend to, and seems to include everyone from Pierre Henry to Don Sebesky, or this guy..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Pike_Set

and Acid Jazz appears to be a different animal altogether

I agree with a lot of what has been put here.  I feel like early Magma and Soft Machine around Third and Fourth both apply, but as VERY psychedelic jazz.  Theres also some Zappa that is pretty far out jazz.
Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell?
I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance.

Other than some already mentioned, this lovely number popped into my mind.

The Khan Jamal Creative Arts Ensemble - Drumdance to the Motherland

"there's not another record on the planet that sounds even remotely like vibraphonist khan jamal's eccentric, one-of-a-kind masterpiece, drumdance to the motherland. in its improbable fusion of free jazz expressionism, black psychedelia, & full-on dub-like production techniques, drumdance remains a bracingly powerful outsider statement thirty-four years after it was recorded live at the catacombs club in philadelphia in 1972. comparisons to sun ra, king tubby, phil cohran & byg/actuel merely hint at the cosmic otherness conjured by the band & by recording engineer mario falana's real-time "enhancements." The original edition of three hundred copies, issued by jamal in 1973 on the local philadelphia label dogtown, was barely distributed outside the city's limits. since then drumdance has assumed a mythic status among the very few aficionados, e-bay mutants, & heads who know of it at all. hallelujah that it can finally be heard outside their murky inner-sanctums! reissue artwork by the legendary dr. e pelikan chalto."

A lot of early fusion is pretty psychedelic. Some Soft Machine certainly qualifies.

More albums from artists I've already suggested:
Wayne Shorter: Super Nova, Moto Grosso Fejo
Pharoah Sanders: Tauhid, Karma
Terje Rypdal: What Comes After, Bleak House
&
Jan Garbarek: Afric Pepperbird, Esoteric Circle
Wolfgang Dauner: Output
Joachim Kuhn: Cinemascope
Ralf Nowy: Lucifer's Dream
Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza: Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura,The Feed Back (Italian krautjazz with Ennio Morricone on trumpet)

That Love Cry Want suggestion reminded me of this excellent very OOP: Association: Earwax (later Association PC. All their albums are great electric jazzrock)

Terje Rypdal, Wolfgang Dauner and Joachim Kuhn are superb-What Comes After is Rypdal's best, but i have not heard the Dauner and Kuhn recordings you mentioned-from what i have heard, i love Dauner's Free Action and Kuhn's Nightline in New York, among others
