Technically, this free jazz record is outstanding. On the other hand, it is sometimes very hard to digest, because of the ultra dense textures played at inhuman speed. This record is the ultimate one for drums & percussions driven at an extreme speed! The saxes, the acoustic bass and the guitars follow very well the infernal cadence, but it is borderline dissonant. The amazing thing is the structure kept despite the impossible music involved. I like to compare this record to the Beefhart's Trout Mask Replica album: the main difference is that here the STRUCTURE is present! One could name this record "Free jazz for drums and percussions". In other words, this record is for the jazz amateur who look for outstanding technical drums and percussions show off, played at the speed of the light!

This album is not jazz-rock of Metheny early albums, or one of many his impressionistic polished and comfortable listening. This album, even is real free-jazz with some elements of post-bop, free-funk, etc.

Even if labeled by Pat Metheny as leader, in reality this album is Ornette Coleman album and Jack DeJohnette album. Two great jazz musicians create atmosphere, similar to Coleman's Prime Time's one. Sax is really interesting there and drumming is outstanding!

Second drummer, participating on this album, is Ornette's son, avant-jazz drummer Denardo. Pat Metheny is on the second plan there with backing guitar and synth sounds.

One rare really interesting (not comfortable or pleasant) album from Metheny. Regular guitarist fans, collecting his often cheesy releases, could be shocked by this release. Everyone, interested in experimental music, will find some really attractive moments there.

4 stars I wonder why it's such a low rating here? Sure, it's hard to digest, but I think that you can say the same about most of krautrock music. For the most part music on this album has the same vibes as some great krautrock, ie. "UFO" by Guru Guru. You just have to surrender and welcome all this sonic no ... (read more)
