MagellanMusic biography
MAGELLANMUSIC was formed sometime in the early 1970's at the height of the Prog Rock era. Many versions of the band came and went as usually happens with most artists, their first album finally appearing in 1975. They were acoustic originally, which made them well known for their peculiar style, a distinct twist in the usual approach to Prog Rock. They were also manic at their work. By 1977 they had released six albums (including a live one), as well as a seventh effort that was never released, a pace that doesn't seem possible. In 1977 MAGELLANMUSIC transformed into the inevitable classic rock 'n' roll band. They tackled the unforgiving music 'circuit' but still recorded their own material, which gave them a more accessible sound, a little less esoteric. It was a somewhat polar environment musically, but apparently more satisfying to them personally. gain they worked feverishly at writing and recording, producing another eight albums by 1981, including one live, one compilation, and one of 'rare' tracks.

In some ways MAGELLANMUSIC was hard to classify. Some called them a 'Rock Band' to simplify it because they were adept at the numerous varieties they explored, but that was their forte. It was refreshing to hear a band inventive enough to play everything from Prog Rock to Folk (and everything in between) and sound perfectly natural at it. That seemed abstract to unaccustomed listeners, but commendable.

By 1982, the music scene had changed drastically. Prog Rock lost its luster, Disco, New Wave, Punk, and MTV-style Plastic Pop flourished, and it forced each member to pursue music in different directions. In 1984 another release appeared, but afterward they were thought to have broken up forever. But in 1988 a new album appeared called "R", their answer to the Beatles White Album (colloquially speaking), after which the band re-united permanently. Since then MAGELLANMUSIC worked steadily as a studio band only, releasing ten albums between 1988 and 1995, some hailed as their finest ever. Finally, with the revolutionary advent of the 'Indie' movement, their first CD appeared in 1997. This was followed by three more, the most recent in 2005 - each a unique work, distinctly different from one to the next, perfect examples of what they've done so well. MAGELLANMUSIC is a rare breed.

4 stars I happened upon MagellanMusic through the luck of fate. My first acquisition was 'Ghost of a Living Twilight' and it was rapture at first listen.

I am about as far from a music aficianado as one can probably get. I know very little about the technical aspect. I do, however love music and have always been drawn towards music I can simply close my eyes to and listen with my heart, mind and soul. I am captivated by pieces that help me to paint a picture or envision a wonderful ballet or modern dance. Ghost most definitely accomplishes that.

There are so many different layers to each of the songs. It has been impossible for me to ever get tired or feel bored by any of the tracks. The accoustical guitar on this album felt as if my own heartstrings were being played.

Beginning with the very first instrumental piece, 'Drifting' I was drawn into this mystical and wondrous world and was able to escape into some breathtaking moments of pure serenity. There are several instrumental pieces on the CD, and each one takes me to a different place and time.

The lyrics in all of the songs can, I am certain, be taken into any one person's life experience(s) at one time or another. They touch the heart, even the soul. In particular I was very drawn to 'Daydreams', 'Crying Inside', 'Season of Life' and 'Picture'.

If you are a person who has a simple love for music that can reach out and touch you, this is a perfect CD.

4 stars Amazing!... yes, I think amazing is an excellent word for Yesterday's Children. To take a set of older recordings and make them sound this good, this contemporary, this entertaining -- is truly an amazing accomplishment. The two Beatles covers are nice faithful versions rendered with love, and "I Only Have Eyes For You" is quite lovely, but it's the original compositions which really stand out here, and demonstrate the band's versatility. From a sweet pop song like "Crush" to the spacey science fiction imagery of "Derelict", Yesterday's Children shows this band can do anything! The album's centerpiece, "Mikada Minn's Interpretation of Derek's Story", is the most astounding piece included -- taking a simple, unfinished demo and creating an intricate and fascinating pastiche of thought and sound. As a long-time fan who's had the privilege of hearing the original versions of nearly every song here, I have to say the new "finished" versions are truly wonderful! So... Amazing! Yesterday's Children is another exquisite musical journey by MagellanMusic.

4 stars "Traffic" demonstrates this band's versatility... rock, blues, new age, weirdness ("Yeti's" especially) this CD has it all. The musicianship is excellent, the lyrical content quite interesting. While I like the "Ghost" CD much better, this one has so much variety -- there's something here for everyone. The "concept" of a night's dreams is a clever device to meld all these songs together. Definitely enjoyable.

4 stars Zond again. This is the other side of the band... those who dare listen will be entertained. The faint of heart should not enter! Here they express their political opinions (neither party is safe!), their observational humor, and their vicious grasp of the language (especially the four-letter variety). The songs here will make you laugh, wince, sing along, and curse the world in agreement. Loads of fun, a great party album -- especially if you'd like to shock your friends. On a side note, this CD is set up chronologically, which makes it interesting to hear the progression of their talent, abilities and skill in the studio. While not prog-rock per se, as an essential part of this band's make-up, I'm giving it four stars -- not as prog as much as just plain old great entertainment.

5 stars I'm a long-time fan of this band, and have to say this CD is truly their best. The performance, the melodies, the lyrical content are all lovely. The use of sound effects enhances the songs, rather than distracts (as some CD's do). The instrumental pieces link songs together, making the entire album a cohesive whole. Even the inclusion ot two Klaatu covers seems to blend in perfectly. (About those, the band are apparently great fans -- the renditions are very faithful, yet have their own unique mark.) The highest praise I can give is that this is one of a very few CD's in my collection that I will hit play a second (and even third!) time, just to hear it once more. Thoroughly enjoyable, and highly recommended!!

4 stars I'm not exactly a music freak, but when I heard this CD I was really surprised. I spent some time with the main fellow in the band, and never once did he mention the band or even let me hear it; I had no idea that he was such a talented man. So, when I got a copy of this I had to ask him if he was really, actually a part of the band. I was so impressed that my wife and I listened to it so much that it was like house music. It's so relaxing and exquisite that we even play it quietly for our infant daughter; it has a tranquil effect on her too. We love this CD. We haven't loved a CD like this in a long time. I would tell anyone that it's well worth having in your CD collection.
