French outfit AWAX was formed in september 2001, initially named Wax. It took some time before a stable line-up settled, but early in 2002 they had stabilized as a quartet, consisting of Olivier Legoff (guitars), Christophe Sarrazin (drums), JF Peyroux (vocals) and ToskiduS (bass, synths). This line-up has remained unchanged ever since.

In 2002 the band recorded and released their first demo, Sacrifice. And two years later a second demo was created, Nevrocosme.

Both demos showcased one particular aspect of this band somewhat unusual in the world of progressive metal: That they chose to sing in French. The band decided that sticking to their native language was the preferred option id they were to avoid having song lyrics dealing with all sorts of cliches so archetypical in all forms of metal-tinged music.

After the creation of their second demo the foursome opted to chnage their name as well, and Wax became Awak - the latter short for Aquitaine Wizards After Experience.

Early in 2009 their first full length production under this new moniker appears: Les Larmes du Monde. On this album synths are used exstensively to add textures to the soundscapes, which is a first for this act - at least when done as exstensively as on this latest venture.

— First review of this album —
3 stars This first official full length production by French act AWAX is a frustrating affair.

Their take on prog metal as a genre is at times really refreshing - from the thrash segments blended into opening track Liquidateurs to the folk-tinged passages of Phame Quest, the dark atmospheric and sparse bass and synth passages found in Karmasutra and the intriguing distorted synth-based theme that opens final cut Wax Attaque.

However, in between these and other themes and passages that are distinctly creative and even pretty original at times we're also served galloping riff sequences with the standard synth or shredding overlay, slower passages more similar to generic metal in sound and a vocalist that tends to hit some metal cliches when his voice is strained, rather than restraining the vocal performance for the latter detail.

There's lots of talent here though - and if some metal cliches and a somewhat subpar production doesn't come across as a negative for you there's quite a lot of interest on this production. Flawed but intriguing is my personal asessment of this one.

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
