I've been finding some late 60s/early 70s progressive bands that never really made it in music for one reason or another, and I'm seriously digging some off this music. One of the bands that I just discovered is "Affinity", along with like "Triumvirat" or "Atomic Rooster" from a while back. There's so much out there in the way of heavy psych prog albums but I never really know what to give a listen to. Can you guys recommend me anything?? My favourite bands would be Genesis, King Crimson, Rush, etc. but slightly more obscure bands/artists include Procol Harum, Supertramp, Caravan, Harmonium, Egg, Pavlov's Dog, and Anthony Phillips.
Thanks a ton for any feedback!

I would like to suggest Italian band "The Trip", and their two best albums "Atlantide" and "Time Of Change"-in the vein of Triumvirat and Egg.
Also Scottish band "Beggar's Opera" and their first three albums "Act One", "Waters Of Change" and "Pathfinder". Similar to the "Atomic Rooster" era groups in a way. Edited by presdoug - August 15 2014 at 10:56 |

Ant is hardly .... obscure. His output alone is way larger than Genesis!
I like some of the stranger and weirder and different things that most folks don't hear enough of.
Some of these might not exactly be considered "progressive", but they all have their own eccentric progressiveness with their work, although they are not considered "progressive" because they do not sound like ELP, Genesis or whatever!
Guru Guru, Incredible String Band, Bonzo Dog Band, Edgar Broughton Band, Capability Brown, Acqua Fragile, Carmen, Egberto Gismonti (earlier stuff), 10CC, Kevin Ayers despite his songster moniker, Roy Harper as the only pure poet out there alongside Peter Hammill ... all in all, things that for the most part will never make the top 100 here at PA, but they are all special in their own way, and many times much better and well defined and designed than the majority of the bands listed in the PA 100, which is overly repetitive and boring, just like a top 10 is! Are you familiar with High Tide? They released Sea Shanties in 1969 and High Tide in 1970. These might be of some interest.

Simon House ... that also played with Hawkwind and David Bowie is pretty much the person behind High Tide, as far as I know. His solo albums (Spiral Realms?) are also way out there, btw ... and weird, spacey and all that!

Some vintage prog albums that might be up your alley:
Kingdom Come - Galactic Zoo Dossier or Journey (Arthur Brown of Kingdom Come worked with Vincent Crane of Atomic Rooster in Crazy World of AB) Speaking of which: Arthur Brown/Vincent Crane - Faster than the Speed of Light The Crazy World of Arthur Brown Wishbone Ash - Argus or There's The Rub Flaming Youth - Ark II (heavy psych blues with a pre-Genesis Phil Collins on drums and a few lead vocal spots) Rare Bird - S/T or As Your Mind Flies By And if you like Caravan: Supersister - Present from Nancy, To the Highest Bidder, Pudding en Gisteren (all three are classics of that style of music, up there with The Land of Grey and Pink IMO) Well, there's a start anyway. Since you like early Genesis and Harmonium, I think you should listen to this one (if you haven't already):

Try a little Gnidrolog, you could do much worse.
Marsupilami and Cressida are also worth your time. All little-known British bands that cut some good music, got nowhere and split. Edited by Mascodagama - August 15 2014 at 13:25 |

I recommend the group GRACIOUS. I have their first two albums and they're both very entertaining prog albums in the Floyd/Tull vein. The sidelong tune "Super Nova" from the 2nd album is a classic.

Thought of another one - Fruupp. They released 4 albums in the early to mid 70s and were done. All good stuff. Lot of comparisons to Genesis, although tbh, I don't really get that so much. Only occasional Genesis touches here and there.

I really like the two Cressida albums released in the early seventies, they're not exactly groundbreaking but they are really well composed.
