Some people really have no clue of how a review should be written... For most, a review is essential in order to know whether a certain album is worth buying. If the relevant info is missing, what's the use of having a review at all?

Yup, so you really have to screen those reviews, but the big problem is the reviewer can reflect in an overly positive or negative way thus wrongly indicating the merits of a particular work. This is especially important when considering many new or more obscure works that don't get the weight of numbers that the more popular works get. This is where you spend your money.

I don't trust the way I review, so I shy away from it as a result.

It's still sad as some who might not be very talented writers, would still want to give reviews for their favorite artists. Instead of deleting these, could this kind of reviewers be helped to fathom what their writing maybe lacks, and give them a change to enhance their writing? Unhappy

EDIT: I mean, my first reviews weren't much better than FloydFan's. If he would be guided to write concretelly why this album is a must have, you could have a new reviewer in the future. Simply bashing peoples own work by indicating thet they do not "qualify", you hurt the writer, lose a potential resource, and turn the site's culture towards a bad direction.

Eetu (& others),

When we delete (or edit) a review a communication is sent to the reviewer, explaining why the deletion and encouraging/inviting him/her to redo and resubmit the deleted one and make new ones.

In general, the replies are fair and the further development is agreeable - some are now fine PA reviewers (although I won't mention names here).

The communication text is more or less "standard" but we always make some changes when it's the first review of a member or when we realize that the reviewer's native language isn't English, etc.

However, any idea for improvement is welcome! Smile

A non-English review here:

VARIOUS ARTISTS — Visions Of An Inner Mounting Apocalypse
Review by ashro

— First review of this album —

5 stars "Better than the originals !"

Looks like it could have been one well worth reading but I cant read it.

Merci, Andrew...

It's a fine review, I think - just needing a good soul to provide the translation.

I understand about a half of that, but my French is not good enough to offer my services here, I'm afraid.

Guigo,

I can translate it, but not at this instant - if I'm the only volunteer I will do it over the weekend. But first I suggest you check if the author can translate himself, after all, he does start with an english sentence himself (or herself).

I could also do it, but lack time.........Smile

Just to inform you all.... I just sent a PM to Guigo with the English translation of the French review. I had some time on my hands, and it wasn't very difficult to do to start with. Obviously, if the review had been in Swahili, I'd have had to decline it...Wink
