Canterbury - The Soft Machine: Third
Crossover - Coheed and Cambria: Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Volume 1: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness
Eclectic Prog - King Crimson: In the Court of the Crimson King
Experimental/Post Metal - Agalloch: The Mantle
Heavy Prog - The Mars Volta: De-Loused in the Comatorium
Indo-Prog/Raga Rock - N/A
Jazz Rock/Fusion - Miles Davis: Bitches Brew (Unless you consider Frank Zappa's Hot Rats JR/F, in which case that would be my choice.)
Krautrock - Can: Tago Mago
Neo-Prog - Agents of Mercy: Dramarama (Not strictly neo-prog, but it is my favorite album classified under the genre. Script for a Jester's Tear would be a more proper choice, though.)
Post Rock/Math Rock - Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Prog Folk - Comus: First Utterance
Progressive Electronic - Klaus Schulze: Timewind
Progressive Metal: Dream Theater: Images and Words
Psychedelic/Space Rock - Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon
RIO/Avant-Prog - Frank Zappa: Hot Rats (If you don't consider that RIO/Avant, then Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye is my choice.)
Rock Progressivo Italiano - Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso: Darwin!
Symphonic Prog - Yes: Close to the Edge
Tech/Extreme Prog Metal - Opeth: Ghost Reveries
Zeuhl - Magma: K.A

Gotta love the amount of Frances love some people have here. Only reason i listed Deloused instead of Frances is because it's the album that started it all. |
I'm in a constant state of metal debate as to which one I like more.

Oh, it was YOU guys!! I couldn't remember who my accomplices were in lobbying for Vashti......but our day has finally arrived.
My thanks to the prog-folk boys who made the call.....it was not my call, I just reminded Hugues about her.
Now if I could just convince someone that we should also be able to review Blue, Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejeira, and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter on this site....Vashti is great but it's remarkable that Diamond Day , a wonderful little folkie album, flies here while JM has like dozens of albums just as remarkable, more complex, and site-worthy.

Vashti? I will check her out soon as I had not heard of the artist but sounds promising.

Yeah, too timid to add anything too extreme.....
btw thanks everyone for supporting the thread!
My initial original post took about an hour to collate - but its worth it as now I have so many more I can check up on that I had not heard of. i trust the choices here as they were the one album that stands out among the thousands per subgenre. I still have not much experience with Indo Raga so I have to look into those. I also got hold of a lot of Australian prog lately from the 70s such as Rainbow Theatre, Tully , Spectrum, Daevid Allen and Mario Millo so looking forward to hearing them soon and reviewing.
Keep listing people and dont worry if the album doesnt fit neatly in to the sub - if its listed in there that's good enough - it takes long enough as it is and I appreciate the trouble you guys have gone to as it is helpful!

^I wouldn't say with my picks they were the one album that stands out from their sub genre but part of the select group of exceptional albums.

Nice to see another Epica fan out there, I take it I'm not the only one looking forward to their new album in March? Couldnt agree more with the RPI, and I cant believe I forgot Quella Vecchia Locanda, so I'll have to change my Le Orme choice to Il Tempo Della Gioia.

At least it is a jazzy RIO/Avant. I brought that up for the sake of thread, however even Zappa himself doesn't care about that

Its a bit like all the people picking Part the Second as their favourite Exp/Post album, despite the fact its not remotely metal (same goes for Opeths Damnation/Heritage for Tech/Extreme). I think its a case of, its in the genre so I'll vote for it. Heck, I almost went for Blood Inside and I know its not Post or Math.

Blood Inside would have been my vote for Avant if Choirs Of The Eye didn't exist.

But Blood Inside isn't even in the RIO/Avant genre, is it?
