Today it's Prog Heaven for "lesser known and unknown new progrock bands" in Holland,
to be more specific: at 1530 the doors will be opened at the second Symforce Festival in Tilburg:

Hi Angelo, indeed it's a pity you had to miss the second version of the Dutch Symforce Festival (although it should be renamed in Progmetal Force Festival, so many young, black dressed POS and Opeth fans).
I have enjoyed the gigs by Magic Pie (splendid Steve Vai inspired guitar solos and twin-guitarplay, lush XB-1 Hammond with Leslie speaker sound and a very enthousiastic performance), The Watch (pleasant Gabriel-Genesis oriented music with wonderful vintage keyboard sound and the singer did a charming effort to tell a small story in Dutch
 ), the last 15 minutes of Alquin (lots of solos on guitar, bass, saxophone ang guitar, accompanied by many Hammond waves) and my absolute highlight, the Belgian progrock band Hypnos 69, they blew away the crowd with their dynamic and powerful sound (using vintage keyboards sounds, saxophone, Cry Baby wah-wah drenched guitar and even a Theremin solo, sensational) and they stunned the fans with a very inspired version of King Crimson their epic Starless. After their gig there was a queue in front of the Hypnos 69 stand in order to buy their CD's, soon I will review their latest effort The Eclectic Measure  By the way, Pain Of Salvation and Opeth were too loud for me, I could bear their music only a few minutes...  This evening I am going to watch the Believe, Sylvan's Posthumous Silence
and Neal Morse live DVD's

Erik, your enthusiasm for these lesser known bands is very infectious! After your excellent reviews I'm very eager to check out Tempus Fugit, Osada Vida, Danny Brill and particularly Nostradamus. Looks like it's time to get the credit card out again!
Did you manage to catch any of Demians set at the Symforce festival? If yes what did you think?

Thanks Paul for the compliments, my mission on this site is to inform the progheads about new and interesting progrock bands. About your credit card, soon I have some new names for you that are very worth to discover, I hope I wil not bring you in financial troubles I haven't seen Demians but my friends told me that the first 15-30 minutes the singer was very nervous, thanks to the warm response of the crowd he did a good job in the end. I am still enjoying my Hypnos 69 gig, this evening I hope to have time to listen to their latest album entitled The Eclectic Measure (only one review on this site, incredible |

Incredible, what an amount of good and interesting progrock Poland has delivered in the last decade: Collage, Albion, Quidam, Indukti, Lizard, Satellite, Riverside, Osana Vida and 'non-PA bands' Hipgnosis, Moonrise and Nemezis. Recently we can add another band to this list: Believe, they made a wonderful debut CD entitled Hope To See Another Day in 2006, followed by the excellent album Yesterday Is A Friend (2008) and now we can enjoy a DVD release that contains a concert recorded in 2007. It was the Hope To See Another Day tour, the band played the entire album plus the songs Memories (on the forthcoming CD Yesterday Is A Friend) and Beggar, from the Mr. Gil album Alone, a project by Mirek Gil and released in 1998. Believe makes pleasant modern progrock that sounds very melodic and harmonic, from dreamy to fluent mid-tempos and bombastic with a solid rhythm-section and tasteful keyboard work (from sparkling piano to lush Hammond organ and even a Keith Emerson oriented synthesizer solo in Coming Down). Singer/guitarplayer Tomek Rozycki delivers a lot of passion in his vocals, the often melancholical undertones remind me of early Bob Dylan. The female violinplayer Satomi Yasutaniya has a very classical style, her solos alternates between intense, swirling and cheerful and the interplay with the other musicans is splendid with a lot of emotion. But guitarplayer Mirek Gil is the focal point in Believe, his sound is very similar to his Rothery inspired work in Collage but he has matured, nowadays his guitarplay contains variety like bending, slide and the use of the tremolo-arm, resulting in many compelling solos, from fiery to howling and the duo-guitarwork in Memories is beautiful. On this DVD you can enjoy an inspired band, an enthousiastic crowd (especially during the band presentation in the excellent track Coming Down), a good sound, varied camerawork, a beautiful lightshow and, last but not least, very good renditions of the Hope To See Another Day material (my favorites are Seven Days and the titletrack, what a great atmosphere). I am absolutely delighted about this band, check out their new album Yester Day Is A Friend and this excellent new DVD, highly recommended! Expected very soon:   |

PoS and Opeth made me doubt about Symforce months ago, as you may recall. Your comment makes me feel a little less bad about missing the festival, although I would've loved to see Demians. |

Listening to The Eclectic Measure I notice obvious hints of the pivotal first King Crimson album (from dreamy with Mellotron to violent with propulsive interplay, fiery guitar and powerful saxophone), the track Ominous (But Fooled Before) even sounds like a variation on 21st Century Schizoid Man but the blend of Hammond organ, violin-Mellotron and Glockenspiel gives this song a special flavor. During my first listening session Hypnos 69 their sound reminded me not only of KC but more and more of (King Crimson inspired) Swedish formation Anekdoten because of the tension between mellow, compelling and violent interludes, the intense vocals, the fiery guitarwork, the propulsive rhythm-section and the frequent use of the Mellotron. But these are subjective musical observations, I would like to emphasize that Hypnos 69 delivers very pleasant and varied, often compelling and dynamic progrock. On this CD we can enjoy 10 strong and varied compositions: between propulsive and compelling with wonderful Hammond and Mellotron waves and splendid guitar (from bluesy to Cry Baby wah-wah drenched guitar solos) in the alternating titletrack, bombastic with a heavy rhythm-section, powerful saxophone, fiery guitar and a lush Hammond organ sound in The Antagonist, warm acoustic guitar and vocals, majestic violin-Mellotron and a Lucky Man-like synthesizer solo in Halfway To The Stars, from dreamy and compelling to bombastic with a surprising piece of flamenco guitar and howling electric guitar in the exciting The Point Of No Return and a great build-up and grand finale in the mindblowing final song Deus Ex Machina, from dreamy with Fender Rhodes electric piano and spacey slide guitar to breathtaking interplay between sensitive electric guitar and violin-Mellotron, goose bumps! I am very glad that I was able to visit the Hypnos 69 gig, otherwise I still would have been unaware of this outstanding Belgian band that has made captivating progrock on their fourth album, highly recommended to King Crimson and Anekdoten fans and Heavy Prog aficonados! Today I listened to Coral Caves, I am a bit disappointed (too much early Marillion-like) and I don't understand why this is categorized as 'Italian Symphonic Prog' because apart from the native vocals there is nothing typically Classic Italian Prog (like Semiramis, Il Paese Dei Balocchi or Osanna) in their music and to me it sounds more like neo-prog than symphonic rock. But perhaps the music will grow, it was only a first listening session. I had a better musical feeling about the new Doracor, strong work on guitar, saxophone and keyboards and very inspired Italian vocals.

I really liked Believe's Hope to See Another Day. I have been really pleased with all of the Collage/Satellite related music that I have heard. Other than Riverside, I am not familiar with the other bands that you listed in your post. Although, I suspect that if I read back on this thread or your previous one, I would probably become enlightened. |

). I hope the teams will make time to add other promising Polish bands like Hipgnosis, Moonrise and Nemezis and unknown bands like Unifaun, Breathing Space and Albatros, really interesting genuine progrock bands that will match with PA its goal to be the ultimate progrock source

Hypnos 69 could be a band that I would really like.
I would not hear much abu tem witout this tread, because frankly I rarely browse through Pschcedelic bands, and Hypnos 69 sounds more like KC and Anekdoten. Even the album is called "Eclectic". So much about pigeonholing.

Well Norbert, I am glad with your positive reaction on my Hypnos 69 review,
like Paul you have discovered a genuine unknown new progrock band
The problem on this site is that you cannot categorize bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, David Bowie, JM Jarre, The Beatles, Rush because of their chameleon-like musical attitude, so many different sounding albums A personal note: from this place I would like to thank you Norbert and all those other loyal fellow progheads for their support to this thread But I won't end in Shakespearian style, no dramatic final letter, no showcase of hurted feelings, not another emotional departure becuase PA has become a part of my life (almost everyday I take a look), I am still very glad that I can inform the longing progheads and symphomaniacs and PA is, despite the change of musical direction, still an abundant source of information

Opeth, POS? I guess it's the Riverside influences that make me think Demians is great then.... Checking out Albatros right now. Great band, with great musicianship. I have a hard time with the vocalist though - not because he sings in Spanish, but because of his voice. Hard to explain, but it 'cuts my ears' in quite a few places. Great key/organ and guitar work. Today I listened to Dyonisos their new album Ages High, very tasteful
Pink Floyd inspired modern prog with strong guitarwork.
 The forthcoming week I hope to review the new The Black Noodle
Project CD and the Mirage album entitled Borderline.
