Neil was into Ayn Rand (not the other two, as far as I know) when he was in his twenties. He has long since turned his back to those ideas, as witnessed by some interviews.

As regards the whole drug question, I have never done any kind of drugs in my life, nor have I ever been interested in trying. In spite of that, I love many bands and artists who have never been shy about their use of various things of drugs - even the most dangerous ones, such as heroin or cocaine. In any case, there are a lot of musicians who don't do drugs, but drink like fish - and alcohol is as bad as drugs, if not even worse.

I didn't know that; but also consider that most countries by now have either legalized/decriminalized recreational pot, or no longer prosecute limited possession and private use. In any case, I was referring to "antics"

I apologize for my harsh statement above, uncalled for and it certainly wasn't a shot against Scott or the person I quoted. Everyone is entitled to be for or against anything and not be ripped for it. I think i'll edit that post.
There's a good interview in High Times with Alex as he discusses it and he believes it should be legailised if your interested. Google it if you like.
Gong certainly weren't quiet about their drug use which I can see would turn people off who don't do it, especially when they albums about pot headed pixies. Why would a non-user be interested? Well many still are I suppose. Daevid Allen in a late eighties(I believe) article said he didn't do drugs anymore.

Like mickey stated on another poll, seems this one is about voting against the other band, not sure why though. It's like the reverse of fanboyism, vote against the big prog band. We saw it with Caravan/ELP...really?? Caravan wins Confused
It's not just the impact a band has had on other prog bands, like I said before most new prog bands hardly are prog anymore, but what influence they may have on all of rock music.

The problem I have with bands like Gong, is the volume of formations they went thru. The early classic lineup died after what 5-6yrs, a very long hiatus and all the motherGong, nyGong, planetGong variations that popped up, reunion shows....so on. Hey it is what it is for Gong.

Then we have bands like Rush, Marillion, ELP and even the Floyd, who kept and still are putting out material as the same group, there are no sub-groups helping them along, or pages of former members.

My point is even if I wanted to vote for Gong I have no idea which group, subgroup I would be voting for......I know who I am voting for when it is Rush in this case.

Geddy and Alex used to smoke weed, maybe still do. Doesn't make them any less of a good person in my opinion.Big smile

That's a good point - a heartfelt honorable mention to the C-Prog flagship :)

But really, all  the publicity Rush has ever received has to do with the music they make, which is kind of unique for such a popular band. I can't remember anything nasty; no messy divorces, no affiliations with unsavory characters or sinister cults, no pharmaceutical antics, no controversial "activism" etc ..

Alex Lifeson and his son had an altercation with a police officer in Miami, FL (I think) sometime in the past 10 years, and were arrested. But all sources I've read point to the fault of the officers.

But that's about it. When they were touring with KISS, Simmons and co. of course invited many groupies into their rooms after shows. On the other hand, Geddy, Neil, and Alex would go back to their rooms and watch TV. LOL

Of course Rush is a top tier prog band.

Sales, longevity, influence - they qualify on all counts as top flight.

All counts.  All three of them Smile

Ah, ok, thanks for the info.
Pretty sure it's 40, not 50, so you're only 9 posts away from voting heaven. Wink

Well, guess it's 7 now. LOL.

Been digging lots of Krautrock lately...stuff like Amon Duul II, Popol Vuh, Guru Guru, Agitation Free and others..
Also exploring lots of wonderful Prog bands which are seldom discussed here on the forum..so much great music. Thanks to Progarchives
I do still like Rush...was never a fanboy though. But, even bands like Birds And Buildings, Kathaarsys, Diablo Swing Orchestra...sound more exciting now...
So,
GonG it is.

It likely will.LOL  You've seen the mean age of the forumites here. Most haven't even likely had their first piece of ass yet or even been divorced yet LOL  LOL

Who do you think makes up the Rush army.. the Geddy is God.. or Peart is God kiddies Wink
As with most things that you say Micky, I take exception, however will gladly admit that Rush be the fountain of youth for some of us old guys.  I can't say that I see the appeal of a bunch of pixie potheads myself, but then again I've always taken pride in living a drug-free existence.

OK, OK, a top tier it is.

Sales and Longevity: These are tell-tale hallmarks of prog since when?

(Hint: since Michael Jackson, Bee Gees, Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra and James Last orchestra Wacko)

Influence: I am not educated in this matter. Care to elucidate?

I'm discussing whether they are top tier, not whether they are prog.

I'd agree with that.

To slightly re-phrase: the present day definition of prog is as vast as it's vague. Sometimes I feel it may be easier to define what's not prog Geek

It may happen to you too, so be warned! WinkSmile
