That thread on progressive rock vs. heavy metal's respective cultural impact made me want to dig out some 1970s Scorpions, since the Uli Jon Roth era is one of those breaking points where you can hear prog/psych's scruffier end turn into heavy metal as we know it. (see also Judas Priest's 1970s run from Sad Wings... to Stained Class)

Sure is 1970s metal in here! There's both the powerdriving fast angular riffing going toe to toe with anything Judas Priest or Rainbow wrote at the time, but still remaining something of a bluesy swagger to how the rhythms swing that the genre would later abandon. Then you can hear high-voltage rainbow warrior Uli Jon Roth's influence in the colourful psychedelic guitar leads and epic progressive numbers on the second half. The heavier more aggressive songs also has this air of flamboyant urban grit decadence that to me seems to more than anything else echo the heavier end of the decade's glam rock movement. ( New York Dolls, The Sweet etc)
