A-F, G-R, S-Z.
More seriously, maybe
Psychedeloid (psychedelic, space, kraut, much of jazz-fusion, post rock etc.)
Symphonoid/melodoid (including some heavy, cross-over, folk, eclectic)
Weirdoid (most RIO, electronic, more experimental sides of eclectic, math, post metal and maybe even some folk/raga)

Symphonic is probably the worst definition of all, since a lot of music that we listen to is ... IS ... symphonic in nature, otherwise it would not be long ... for example. But the issue here is that many bands are considered "symphonic" and they do 3 minute cuts, which, by nature are not "symphonic", since by its very nature, it is a longer piece of music, that might have/encompass a few more "movements" than simply a sonata styled song for its work.

And this creates another issue ... let's take RETURN TO FOREVER as an example. By nature, they are VERY "symphonic", but their most likely location for their work is under FUSION ... which really is not what they are about ... they are less "jazz" than they are experimenting and expanding a segment of music they created, with some experimentation inside of it, or room for the players to have some fun on their own! In this sense, they are more of a symphonic group ( specially considering the classical training of a few of their members!!!!!), but they will never get that definition since they do not sound like GENESIS ... and this is a very gross over sight by many folks, that are looking at "Renaissance" or "Mister Mouse" and other pieces as a SONG, and in reality, they are NOT a song!

My take, still is, that until we work the musical terms correctly and properly, the definitions that have been created for "progressive music", are a joke, by folks that really do not know music ... it's really simple ... all of the terms have been around for a long time, and now we want to change them to something they are not.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Alternately:

Di "Hundin Luszt Zeuhl" uz "Di Wurdah Zeuhl" uz "Di Hamtaahk Zeuhl".

Okay, not grammatically correct Kobaian, and I do love Zeuhl, but it it has its haters who might cry "Wurdah Zeuhl" if they knew basic Kobaian...

Just a fanboy passin' through.

1. NZ Prog
2. Aussie Prog (this enormous cohort will obviously need some subdividing, starting with the usual split between Mike Rudd bands vs everyone else, and continuing on from there)
3. Exotic Prog From Other Mysterious and Far-off Cultures...

Simple!

Big smile

Prog rock is a sub genre (of rock). I might make a slight distinction for the jazz and fusion oriented stylings.
