OK, you three and five stars enlighten me!
Give me a list of the best of the late 80s, 90s and here to come (short and precise, think!)of the neo-prog, melodic jazz/rock fusion, dream pop, slacker prog, etc. Something that truly holds up to the classics that you've discovered. Dont do experimental, as it rarely hits an over the top integration( as in say Pat Metheny -Song for X?). I am not an extremist it has to have melody and rhythm(off center is fine) and not take a million listens before you find something. Here is a list of some of the things I have heard that caught my attention from the late 90s and 21st century: Craig Chaquico - A Thousand Pictures Dan Hicks - Beatin the Heat Alice In Chains - Flies in a Jar/Sap Beck - Mellow Gold/Odelay Elastica - same Mermen - Amazing Health and Happiness Phish - Rift Bush - Deconstructed Larry Carlton - Sapphire Blue Bozzio Levin Stevens - Black Light Syndrome From Dusk til Dawn - soundtrack Wynton Marsalis - Mr. Jelly, Lord St. Germain - Tourist Action Figure Party -same you see I am pretty eclectic mainstream, but anti noise and psuedo prog. I like Marillion - Misplaced Childhood, but aint quiet up to par with the real deal. Would like to see a true progressive best of for IQ, Dream Theatre, Pendragon, Porcupine Tree, Anglagard, etc. A REAL TOP 5 CANT MISS of what this generation believes to be the next Magical MysteryTour, Quadrophenia, Paranoid, Aqualung, Selling England by the Pound, Close to the Edge, Brain Salad Surgery, Countdown to Ecstasy, Killer, Full Moon Fever, Force Majuere, Oxygene. What will you point your childrens children too? ___________ For the music is your special friend Dance on fire as it intends Music is your only friend Until the end Until the end Until the end So when the music's over When the music's over, yeah When the music's over Turn out the light Turn out the light Edited by DallasBryan |

threefates,
I have heard most of the bands you mention, maybe not the specific CD, as I tried to go for the hyped best by each artist. Found some OK, nothing to write home about. it is a real crap shoot out there, probably listened to 2000 90s/ til now artists found maybe 10-20 that really caught my attention. |

Most the time I find its specific songs on an album that I like... which is always the way it is... so these days if I can't download songs.. I'll buy the cd and make my own compilation...

I am not sure if this is what you mean DB but you should check out Proto-Kaw. They are good. You can read about their history and stuff here and elsewhere www.protokaw.com but do it this way get the "early recordings" CD first then listen to thier new one released earlier this year. Some good stuff and they are working on thier next one due out in July. |

Frogg Cafe - Creatures (I just bought this CD. FC started out as a Zappa cover band in the NYC area. What they play is not a copy of Zappa. It's actually more in the traditional prog vein, however, occassionally you get a Zappa-esque turn of phrase. I'm quickly finding this to be one of the better bands I've heard of the last 50 or so purchases I've made.) Riverside - Out of Myself (I can't say enough good things about this album. Sure, it's derivative, but it has power, grace and shades of light and dark.) Guy Manning - A Matter of Life and Death (Manning has 4-5 CD's out. The man has a great storytelling ability, writes wonderful melodies and he's got a very unique voice. There is a lot of Ian Anderson style, though he's not a clone.) Echolyn - Nearly Everything (IMHO, you can't go wrong with Echolyn. Although they've been called a Gentle Giant clone, I don't hold to that. When I go into my music room, nine times out of ten I'll reach for Echolyn before grabbing a GG album. They have four essential CDs: Suffocating the Bloom, As the World, Cowboy Poems Free and Mei. I would track them down in that order. Of the four, I'd say CPF is the most accessable, the most melodic, with Mei at the other end since it's one tune, 50 minutes long. Heady stuff.) In the Jazz/Fusion realm: Allan Holdsworth - Secrets (A very melodic album. My favorite Holdsworth release. It's deep, complex, emotional and contains some of his most melodic playing.) Mastermind - Excelsior! (Thanks Dick. This one really rocks. Great melody and structure.) Ohm - Ohm (Chris Poland smokes just about any modern fusionier('cept AH, of course) on this one. Melodic power rock/jazz.) Blues: Tab Benoit - Standing By the Bank or These Blues are all Mine (Tab's my favorite blues artist. He always puts on a great show. A mix of blues and cajun music. Tab has a great voice and shreds pretty good on his Telecaster.) Rock (alternative): Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Sister Sweetly or Beautiful World (BHTM has many facets, but through it all you get strong melodies, great guitar, solid rythm section, killer lyrics and Todd's smokey voice.)
