I was just browsing through the Archives and i noticed The Mars Volta where not mentioned.  The last 2 albums they released where Prog/Concept albums.  I have a copy of the third album coming out March 1st and its gonna blow some minds.  Its one of the best Prog albums ive heard in awhile.

Cygnus....Vismund Cygnus(13:08)

  1. Sarcophagi
  2. Umbilical Syllables
  3. Facilis Descenus Averni
  4. Con Safo

The Widow(5:57)

L’ Via L’ Viaquez(12:27)

Miranda That Ghost Just Isn’t Holy Anymore (13:15)

  1. Vade Mecum
  2. Pour Another Icepick
  3. Pisacis (Phra-Men-Ma)
  4. Con Safo

Cassandra Gemini(31:42)

  1. Tarantism
  2. Plant A Nail In The Navel Stream
  3. Faminepulse
  4. Multiple Spouse Wounds
  5. Sarcophagi

Its a great album.  To those who havnt heard it you should definitly check it out.

The Mars Volta, like Radiohead and Voivod, are perfect examples of modern prog. Because they're knocking down barriers, expectations, limitations, etc. They have the spirit of the '70s greats but sound nothing like them. What could be more progressive? I too have an early copy of 'Frances The Mute' (which I WILL buy when it comes out in March), and it's true modern prog (but I can't say it's better than De-lousing, no way...)

I made the same mistake with Voivod...I looked a few days ago, they weren't there. Tonight, there they are. GREAT! Is there a place on this site that announces new bands that have been added??? would be good to know if there is...and if not, is that possible???

New band's are announced on the sidebar in the "prog archives" section (menu bar, to the far right). It's the place with the contact info and stuff.

Yeah, I have De-Loused, its interesting.

But I have to say... whats up with all the song titles? I mean, yeah okay they're prog but holy crap... Yes had more understandable titles than those!

Yeah, a big (but recent) fan of The Mars Volta but there's much more for me to seek out as I hardly know anything about them. I've always been drawn to bands that hover near the dissonant end of the sound spectrum and these guys do the 'nasty' perfectly.

As for it being prog or not, I don't know and I don't really care. I suppose as is usual in such cases, such determinations are usually made with 20/20 hindsight.

I must remind the right honourable gentleman that a monologue is not a decision.

I found out about them last October, and fell in love with them.  They basically opened me up to prog as a whole.  And, to the topic creator, is it true that one of the songs on the album clocks in at  30:00?

that's just it beau it ain't there no more -  may be it s a computer / tecnological hitch

nevermind - anywya - Mars Volta are touring over here in the UK in March _ i have seen this band live a coupla times adn WOW!!!!!! - that's all I can say!!!! - Absolutely enthralling - their Lp is an outright 5-star - no doubt about it - there sound is perhaps close to what the modern Crimson are doing at the mo - close but not the same - like Laterlus by Tool maybe - I dont' know - they are very hard to describe their so original - Yes, they have influences - but they are so disparate and come together to creat a most welcome sound. I know influences they have talked about are: Fripp & Eno's No Pussyfutting LP - Alice Coltrane - Sun Ra - MC5 etc..

31:42

All the times of the songs are listed right beside the name of the song on the tracklist i posted.  And that song is truly amazing.
