I would say that all these bands have been classified in one way or another. They are either Extreme Metal or Progressive Metal, though some are Extreme Progressive Metal.
You are correct in saying that they are in different classifications because most of them are cross-overs in one form or another that have blended one form of Metal, (primarily Black Metal or Death Metal) with Electronic or Industrial music.
For some it was successful, for others it was an unmitigated mistake.

I daresay that Neurosis single-handedly invented "post-metal".

Out of the choices, I pick Ulver.

Devin Townsend- his music is unique and amazing. Every album he has brings something different to the table.

I'm not really a fan of those artists. I guess I'm really picky about my taste in metal.

Hard to pick...
but I really love it when indie kids try to claim that Jesu isn't a
metal band. They're like 'pshh.. that's not metal, I wouldn't
listen to it if it were metal...' Even when you point to the
Godflesh/Napalm Death connections, they won't admit it.

More than half of the bands in this poll are in the archives,so I am moving this to Prog Polls.

The "last" tendencies in Metal is unfortunately noisier, grimier, gorier, grossier, worser (sic). When you have to strain to hear or make out the actual riff(s) there is something not quite right.

Usually it's not about riffs and licks like traditional metal, but rather focuses on layering and atmosphere. The goal is to create a mood, not to dazzle with complicated riffery.

That sounds like a critique I once read about classical music - that it sounded like a song was about to start, but then didn't . I like riffs. Atmosphere for me sounds like it takes 15 minutes to get to something vaguely resembling a melody. Or something you hear as background music in a horror movie.

I voted Voivod, but where's Amorphis, Opeth, and Dark Tranquility?

When Porcupine dream and another day unite, we shall awake to find the pain of salvation is but a grand illusion, which will render us comfortably numb and make us remember these scenes from a memory.

I would have chosen Ulver, but only a few of their early albums have anything to do with metal, it feels kind of inappropriate.
That leaves Neurosis, they were incredibly influential.

Ulver would be my pick, but their metal albums do very little for me, whereas I find their recent direction fascinating. As Selkie pointed out, it feels inappropriate to pick them when this seems to be a poll about metal.
I suppose it's Neurosis then, although I've only heard one of their albums.
