Meh.  Great album, but I wanted to highlight something different in the poll options.  Maybe the Jefferson Airplane live isn't considered by most to be at the same level, but it's a good one that's not so well known.

Live At Leeds
4.01

Live At The Monterey Festival
4.03

EDIT: Incidentally, the choice I thought I might get the most flack over was Lacrimosa's as the Prog Metal representative

oh I know what you were doing...  just answering some wag that thought Frampton should have been on the list hahhaha.

Surprised about Grobschnitt not getting any votes?

No problem, crimhead, but you should know better: this is a no fun zone! Wink Oh wait, if this was a non fun zone then Micky would very rarely poke his head in to have fun with peeps.  Maybe if you'd chosen someone less Prog-Related than Frampton like the Bee Gees, though I could be wrong about the brothers Gibb.

And, Micky: I'd read the post you were responding too, and understood your intent.  I just too the opportunity to explain my thinking behind some of the choices, but it's not a consistent poll as in some cases I went for very popular lives in their categories, and in others I opted for somewhat lesser-known ones even if there were more popular choices that I liked at least equally.  In the case of not choosing The Who's great album, which is an old favourite of mine, part of me didn't want to see an album from a non-prog category doing better than the prog choices.  I'm a fan of JA, though.

As for Grobschnitt's -- yeah I am surprised it has no votes.  I wouldn't expect that many, but no votes?  Not only is it an exceptionally good album from possibly the most popular category here (symph), but in the symph live top list it has the highest ranking.  That said, it also has the lowest number of rating of the top four, so I expect had I put Camel's, Yes', and Genesis' instead, any of them would have votes.  Oh, I see Renaissance at 5.  I also have Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall, and that is excellent; best album by the band that I've heard.

Welcome Back My Friends ...

Anyway, my favourite of the list (and remembering that I haven't actually heard them all) are Live/Hhai, Grides, Skakti w/, Solar Music, Ereia, The Greta Deceiver, and Playing the Fool -- which I slipped in near the bottom as an extra.  Oh, and Retrospictive 1 if it counts enough which consists of what may be favourite Magma track.  Nothing beats that version of Theusz Hamtaahk that I've heard, including the BBC one.

One I really wanted to mention that I have and like considerably is this:

2005
Theatre Royal Drury Lane
4.56
(7 ratings)

Side note: It's sad just how many bands that did great live concerts have never officially released live albums, or have had those concerts recorded.

many excellent live albums missing on the list. here some of my favorites::

Van der Graaf Generator - Vital (perhaps the best live album ever, in my honest opinion)
Guru Guru - Live
Kraan - Live 75
Aera - Live
Embryo & the Karnataka College of Percussion - Life
Steve Hillage - Live Herald
Frumpy - Live
Wishbone Ash - Live Dates
Colosseum - Live
Samtana - Lotus
Peter Hammill - The Margin +
Peter Hammill - There Goes the Daylight

not prog:
Atlantis (the German band of that name) - Live

I could name a lot more. I love live albums and definitely prefer them to studio albums

I voted for 'other'.
I love live albums, from Judy at Carnegie Hall to No Sleep Till Hammersmith, via Jerry Lee Lewis Live at the Star Club and the Ramones' It's Alive!

Wow, again a poll from which I only know 5 or so, cool! TongueClap

Shakti with John McLaughlin:S/T - I just listened to this one, for the first time, a couple of days ago. The first track is so killer, it practically blew my head off. Great concert!

Ash Ra Tempel:Le Berceau Du Cristal - not sure if it's their best, but it's anyway a late-released classic, in which Göttsching tries more synth, sequence and ambient music than anywhere else on the Ash Ra Tempel records. The Private Tapes from 1996 offer some concert takes, many of them dark and experimental and long, but as we approach this the global way (integrating, therefore, Ashra as well), I'd say my favorite live is Sauce Hollandaise: maybe lacking the Ash Ra art, but absolutely electrifying in places!

Jean-Michel Jarre: Concerts en Chine - Shocked! nice mention, Greg, and I'm really fond of it, because it's great, "classic" music by Jarre, plus some smashing extras like "Arpegiator" (or how's it called); if people believe in Jarre's first albums but admit the rest is fallen, they should stop to also mention this concert, a great one in my books.

Tangerine Dream: Ricochet - best TD evuh, of course! CoolCoolCoolCool

Grobschnitt: Solar Music-Live - haven't actually heard it, but it's the one album from the poll that I want to buy and hear, pronto! Smile

Playing The Fool, Bursting Out, even Carnegie Hall (Renaissance) - fine candidates for great live albums by great prog bands.

Solar Music Live is the best album I know from the list, but it simply can't compete with The Great Deceiver, the monster-multidisc-set. It wasn't fair for the other albums, either.

Couldn't choose between Ricochet, Hhaï or Sleepy Buildings - so plumped for Lacrimosa Big%20smile

Other's worthy of mention (but not mentioned yet Wink):

801 - 801 Live
Porky Pinetree - Coma Divine
Pain of Salvation - 12:5
Peter - Gabriel Plays Live
Fripp & Sylvian - Damage
Hackett - The Tokyo Tapes
Diamanda Galas - Malediction And Prayer

and my all-time favourite...
A.C.N.E. - June 1, 1974
