Those are good choices. i was listening to some Procol Harum last night and they are definitely worth a mention esp Salty Dog and First Album and Shine on Brightly. Classic proto prog.
The Nice are worth a mention too!

The Nice are a Symphonic bands, their similarities with
- ELP
- Refugee
Are so big, that i would be absurd to have them in Proto Prog...While most of the bands were doing mostly an elaborate form of Psyche (90% or more PP bamnds have an obvious Psyche connection), The Nice was doing complex and elaborate re-works on classical music.

That would be Progressive, but it isn't Proto - proto would be tracks like April, Anthem, The Shield and Mandrake Root.

- Machine Head........ 1972
- Quadrophenia........ 1973
There's no way this albums can be Proto Prog, Proto means previous or antecesor, in 1971 Prog already existed, not to say in 1973, both bands should be in Prog Related IMO.

the albums aren't obviously. .the groups are... but whoever listed them probably just half-assed the question to mean 'top 5 albums by artists listed by the site AS proto-prog'
