Topic: Steppenwolf as proto prog? Posted: October 22 2008 at 22:34 |
Ok, as these suggest new band debates do manage to get some interesting points of view across, here's another one to ponder about. Although not very complex music, these guys have for sure had an influence on heavy prog - and indeed many acts heavy on the hammond will have listened much to these dudes - especially their earlier albums with tunes such as Magic Carpet Ride, Jupiter's Child and Don't Step on the Grass, Sam.
Is it enough to merit an evaluation?

I like the band, their live album is phenomenal but Hammond doesn't equal prog, not even proto prog.
A great rock n roll band anyway!

Never really thought, even back when, of Steppenwolf as prog. First album, beyond the usual, contains the wonderful Desperation. The second album -- side two in particular -- is about as close to prog as they got. I need to get that album (LP is long gone). Third one is okay, but man did they fall off after that.
However they get bonus points for the photo of that penis car, almost though not quite enough to warrant inclusion, IMO.

Would be the first time I ever see Steppenwolf quoted in a discussion about progressive rock... But, as I hardly know their music, I would rather check my father's CD to listen their songs. Nevertheless, I doubt of Steppenwolf being a progressive or prog-related band a priori.

It suddenly occurs to me the photo of the penis car on the inner sleeve of For Ladies Only might have made a great cover for Love Beach

Good to see the crowd in here aren't totally off their rockers *chuckles*
Been at least one other suggestion here that was just as offbeat lately ;-)

What did you smoked today Olav?
I know you only smoke tobacco, but don't leave your package in unsafe places.

Nothing smoked mate - just my somewhat offbeat sense of humour ;-)
With quite a few suggestions on the weird side I thought I'd thrown in one from far out left, add a couple of answer alternatives that really showed this wasn't a very serious thingy - and see who responded and in what fashion.

Let's face it, Steppenwolf are not that different from Iron Butterfly, who somehow have a place here on PA...

Well, I still haven't listened to Steppenwolf, but I never read or heard that they did some kind of 18 minutes Hammond mastodon. Now, I really must go to a music library or a record shop to get an idea of their music...

I just got through listening to most of their catelog for the umpteenth time now. There are a few moments of prog/psyhc stuff. Put the song "monster" on the list for sure. There are some fusion/jazz moments on their cds. On For ladys only, the title song has some nice proggy moments too. check out "black hole" from that cd also.

Iron Butterfly were somehow on here before there was a "Proto Prog" or "Prog Related" category. That's the worst part. I think they may have even been classified as Symphonic at one point.
If you really must add Steppenwolf, then you might as well include The Guess Who and Grand Funk Railroad. And rename the website "ProgArchives + Classic Rock".

Sometime s I feel that any random band gets chucked in here and then it's left to everyone else to try and find any slightest sign of progevity.

Not these guys. No prog policy in their music. Just psych pop 70s rock.

I believe you are mistaken Harry.
Prog Archives exists since Jan 29, 2004 (That was the date when M@X joined and 2 days before Ronnie did), I joined Prog Archives on April 27, 2004, and even though there was no Prog Related, Proto Prog already existed, with bands as The Nice and Procol Harum.
Iron Butterfly (even when I didn't agreed originally), was added directly to Proto Prog.
BTW: Even when Prog Related was only created around 2005 or 2006, we used ART ROCK as the simplest form of Progressive Rock that combined Prog with mainstream, I now that for sure, because the first bio I wrote was for STYX, only a few days after I joined and they were in Art Rock.
I can also assure you that Iron Butterfly was NEVER in Symphonic

About Steppenwolf, I agree that would be absurd to add them, sounds more like a bad joke..
