GO LEAFS GO!!!!! Great avatar as well!!
For me, (and this is not a cop out) I think both guys are right for the era's of the band they were in. Sort of like Paul D'ianno and Bruce Dickenson.
I could not imagine Fata Morgana with Alder, or Parallels with Arch. Not that I wouldn't listen to either do either one, but it is like FAtes WArning during the Arch era was a different band...a little more organic, than from No Exit On where they became a bit more polished. Arch's style was more "punk" or maybe less operatic?, and FW's sound was a bit less produced for the first 3 albums.

Wow, Alder is way ahead Arch! A shame...
Really, Alder is a great and underrated singer with an amazing voice, but John Arch is just perfect. Just listen to the chorus in "Exodus".

John Arch for me... I know he is no so easy to hear... but when you discover the real potential of the singer presence you have to believe it... Arch is just great... Adler should win... but at least my votes goes with Arch...
His solo album is one masterpiece... without a doubt...

a very underrated band with an amazing singer and his name is Ray Alder. His voice is so powerful and beautiful that it is very rare in the Prog metal scene.

John Arch is not a Bruce Dickinson clone. He may have a similar style but to my ears he sounds nothing like him. I have heard Arch on Awaken... and on his Twist Of Fate EP and I would say his voice is definitely an aquired taste. I first heard it on his website when he was releasing the EP and I was quite taken aback by it. Very unique and I think brilliant.
Having said that, I prefer Ray Alder. His voice is more to my taste and while not as unique as Arch's, it still has something different about it and as someone else has said, he could be my favourite prog metal singer.

I can't vote on this one. I think they're both great vocalists in their own way. I've heard Ray Adler perform some of the Jogn Arch era songs, and he doesn't pull it off that well, but I can't really imagine anyone else singing "Perfect Symmetry", "Parallels", "Inside Out" or "A Pleasant Shade of Gray".
But, man, John Arch is really really really good on "A Twist of Fate" - I think I also enjoy his voice more on the EP than on "Awaken the Guardian". |

Arch is a fine singer and suited the band's early style, but I prefer Ray Alder. He may be my favorite prog metal vocalist.
Alder makes use of lots of higher register vocals like his predecessor on the albums No Exit and to a lesser extent on Perfect Symmetry, but from Parallels (which I still need to buy) onward he found his own voice. If he kept singing the higher vocals, his voice would probably not sound as good as it does today. I just listened to the Arch EP, and it's definitely moved to my "To Buy" list. This may be sacriligious to some, and perhaps a bit premature, but I think I prefer it over Awaken The Guardian. Edited by Stooge - November 06 2009 at 23:16 |

Ray Alder for sure, but as sinkadotentree said Arch solo album Twist of fate is an essential listning and his prestation on Awaken the guardian or The spectre within is excellent. But I prefer Alder on Perfect symmetry or Parallels is mindblowing, impresive

Verdade, esqueci.
Well, apparently it isn't possible to edit it. And please, John Arch a Dickinson clone? They are somewhat similar, but a clone?

Went for Alder...but I agree that Arch is great. I still need to hear more Arch albums, as I have only the Chasing Time compilation.

Hey, I think that this poll needs another option: "NEITHER".
I like the sound of this prog metal band, but John Arch is a Bruce Dickinson clone, and Ray Alder sings in the melodic metal style, that I hate. Then, I can't vote in this poll... |
