Two brilliant guitarists who at one time played in Gong, Steve Hillage and Allan Holdsworth. Both great musicians and very innovative on many different levels. Your favourite of the two?

Steve Hillage is one of my favorite guitarists that played with anyone. Though I do very much like Holdsworth and listen to many of his projects.

Allan Holdsworth is technically a far better guitarist, but I find some
of his stuff lacking in feel, whereas Steve's playing is beautiful and
emotional - So Steve every time for me!

Steve Hillage isn't bad (I really like FISH RISING) but he can't hold a candle to Holdsworth, who is completely sui generis. Apart from Gong, he has triumphed with Soft Machine, Bruford, U.K. and on numerous solo albums. It's true that Hillage, at his best, had passion, and a few original ideas, but if you compare his overall achievement with Holdsworth's there's simply no comparison.
N.B. If you wanted to restrict your poll to their achievement with Gong alone, I still prefer Holdsworth, since GAZEUSE features by far the most musicianly, melodious and mellifluous guitar-playing to be found on any Gong album. Banana nirvana manana! |

Steve Hillage was more suitable with Gong than Holdsworth.

Daevid Allen's Gong was collapsing all around him, almost as soon as Hillage joined the band! |
