I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Here is a link showing some of the 1979 releases. Let me know if you think 2019 or 1979 releases are stronger or weaker. |

Neal Morse (Adventure)
Sebkha Chott Disillusion Poil Aaand Cheeto's Magazine I guess? Comparing to 79 seems pointless for me as I've listented to ten times more albums of 2019 than of 1979.

Congratulations. You listen to current music more than the classics. That kind of was the point. Most members here are stuck in the past and listen to the same stuff over and over. It's reflected in the threads. It's cool to know that maybe 5% on this site listen and realize that today's music is as good or better than 4 or 5 decades ago. |

I buy a ton of new music, your poll proves nothing of the sort, both eras have good music.

I disagree. As far as the big name old bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, ELP, Camel, King Crimson, GG etc that might be true but the more obscure newer bands(which is most of them)get a lot more exposure than the obscure bands of the old days. Aside from one guy on here obsessed with a german keyboard led band(I won't mention his name or the band)most of the lesser known older stuff takes a backseat to newer prog. However, I should mention that anything before 2010 can be considered older. Stuff gets forgotten pretty quickly in the prog world(imo).

I'm not even sure I listened to 5 albums from this year
![]() Grand Tour - Big Big Train Infest the Rats Nest - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard In Caude Venenum - Opeth I do remember liking that bent knee album but I have to listen more. Resistance by IQ was alright, probably worth a revisit but I don't get the hype necessarily. After seeing a couple people mention thieves kitchen I'm now on a mission to hear that. Should I expect a similar sound to Anglagard based on the lineup?

Thieves Kitchen do not sound at all like Anglagard. On the other hand, they have a certain Canterbury vibe which I like a lot. They are an excellent band, not easy to label.

IQ - Resistance Steve Hackett - At The Edge Of Light In Continuum - Acceleration Theory Elbow - Giants Of All Sizes Magic Pie - Fragments Of The 5th Element 1979 Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure Supertramp - Breakfast In America UK - Danger Money Edgar Froese - Stuntman Eloy - Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes Feels 'cheating' a bit to include electronic releases but Force Majeure is Tangerine Dreams most 'proggy' album and had a real drummer! Edgar's solo album is a bona fide classic of the genre. RIP Edgar you are very much missed. I've also cheated including Elbow but this is a fantastic album and is 'prog' in my opinion. Not sure I can decide which year is better in terms of top five at the moment. If you wrestled me to the ground and pinned me down and only let me up if I give an answer then its 1979. |

I'm still listening to the 2019 releases. I don't think I can make a decision on the top 5 yet until the year is over.
Possible groups that might make it include IZZ, IQ, Aliante, Cheeto's Magazine, Conqueror, Czyszy, Los Exploradores, Finisterre, Goblin... and I see I already have more than five... oy!

You state your position as the majority of members here don't listen to new music and of those that do only 5% realize the truth that today's music is better. I call BS on this. Most members listen to plenty of new music, by our very nature we are always looking for new music. I'd posit that people find plenty of good new music, they just prefer the music from the past.
