I already have Anekdoten, Agalloch, Opeth and Leprous. Should I try Anglagard, Riverside, or something else entirely?..Hopefully this will make me forget some good but cheesy bands I've tried recently.

Anglagard is neither extreme metal nor heavy
![]() If you like Anekdoten, you might also like Landberk. ![]() |

Well...I would try reading the Heavy Prog page at PA and listening to some of the high rated albums here.
try some Rush or Porcupine Tree before moving on to less known bands... there is also an extreme metal page link at the top of the main page headings.

Yeah nothing much extreme in the bands you mention (which is to say ExTech has little to do with HeavyProg).
Almost anything with Ron Jarzombek for Tech. |

From the bands you listed i'd go with Intronaut.
They're not mindlessly metal, a nice mix of heavier vocals and normal singing, great musicianship, etc.

One of the most confusing recommendations here. I don't know what to say.

Master James of St. George.
Of the fields and the sky. He used to build castles of stone, steel, and blood. But lines get broken down. |

Indeed Anglagard has nothing of Metal, but it's great anyway, so you might just as well check them out. I might say you could try Pain of Salvation, Devin Townsend, Haken. Riverside are great, though they are more in the soft side of metal, I guess, nothing extreme about them. I guess you already know Dream Theater?
Oh yes, and you might just as well listen to Sleepwalkers by Van Der Graaf Generator. Not metal at all, for they are a full blown 70's prog band with no guitars at all... but that singing from Peter Hamill might just as well be the precursor for extreme metal vocalists. |

If you like Agalloch try with these albums
Fen - The Malediction Fields Alcest - Souvenirs D`un Autre Monde Ulver - Bergtatt Enslaved - Ritiiir Similar to Opeth (like Blackwater Park and Still Life) i recommend you Farmakon - A Warm Glimpse If you like Anekdoten, Try Landberk, Sinkadus, Anglagard, Gargamel, Ravanna (not metal bands but all great) Really dont like Leprous, but try Into etenity, a truly progresive melodic death metal, i recommend you the album Buried in Oblivion |

I second Atavachron's suggestion - Jarzombek is mindblowing. Check out Blotted Science - Cretaceous Chasm; start with the youtube video synched to King Kong, follow up with the video explaining his 12 tone concept behind the song.

MESHUGGAH !! The best extreme metal I've come across. I'm not a fan of Death Growls, but in this band, I can accept them coz the music / playing is outrageously insane - in a fantastic way

For a change of sound, you might want to try Cynic or (even better) Exivious some time.

Prog Metal - Try Pain Of Salvation, Redemption & Fates Warning...great vocalists in Gildenlow and Alder..and best musicianship among all the bands listed under Prog Metal category here. Extreme Metal - Now since u already enjoy Opeth and Leprous, try the most popular ones first..i.e. Death and Cynic..also Aghora ( Jazz-Metal) by Cynic's rythm guys...as Angelo mentioned - Exivious. (Fantastic Jazz - Metal with a jam like feel )...if u happen to enjoy these bands then i feel u wud b ready to explore most of the extreme bands. Enslaved has already been mentioned.. Try Edge Of Sanity - Crimson (40minutes of awesomeness). Animals as Leaders Gojira... Mastodon . . . . . Lots of great bands there, but most importantly u shld first go through the reviews and find for urself the one's that suit ur taste and mood. P.S. Never jump on to bands like Gorguts/Negura Bunget/Deathspell Omega...they're freaking awesome..,but u won't b able to enjoy them unless u have sufficient Extreme Metal experience. |

I recommend the finnish band Insomnium (if you haven't already, I dunno). It's a melodic death metal band but it's quite atmospheric, if i saw them classified as progressive death, I would not disagree.
Another melodic death metal band I enjoy is Be'Lakor. I warmly recommend it. |

If u enjoy Agalloch's post black metal then u can try Alcest.
Neurosis and Isis are the seminal bands. I think u already know Tool. Fen Intronaut Early Ulver Maudlin of the Well Devin Townsend and many more. You can go through some reviews by Mr. Conor Fynes. He is my most trusted reviewer for all things related to Post Metal/Extreme. |
