I love the new DT album, although I kind of over-listened to it. On the surface it seems like it's nothing new, but it's a much more complex album than they've probably ever released; so I say keep listening to it, as its beauty will reveal itself in time.

@ zumacraig - Make sure you get Octavarium, the title track is one of the best prog pieces in the last 30 years. Very epic, not unlike The Flower Kings. The album itself has a few classic DT songs.

I've been doing a TFK marathon over the past week. One album per day (otherwise it'd be too much for me), though I took a 2 day break after Flower Power, but now I'm on The Rainmaker. This particular album is really clicking for me, it has an almost sad quality to a lot of music, especially City Of Angels, I don't know why. But of course it hints to the jazzy-ness of later albums, which I also really like. For a guy who already quit the band when they recorded this, Jamie Salazar plays some of the best stuff Ive heard from him in TFK.

Back in The World of Advenures or Stardust We Are would be both be appropriate starting points.

Space Revolver should be first, as it is by far the best and most consistent.  All prior FK CDs have low moments(frankly cause TFK release 3x the music on a CDTongue) and a new listener could be let down with the "lesser" tracks.
 
Plus, Space Revolver is arguably their best, though some here say Unfold The Future.  No way Jose, The Truth Shall Set You Free is great but that is pretty much it....  Just my $.02
 
But certainly one needs to get a recording of the song; Stardust We Are, that would be mandatory for any new FK fan.Smile
 
And guys did you notice how I didn't say get Space Revolver because it has the best FK song of all time on it?
(The Chicken Farmer Song)  Actually I made my entire case without even mentioning The Chicken Farmer Song!
That just shows how strong a record Space Revolver is. Tongue

I have been doing a one a day TFK marathon too.  Today's edition will be Adam and Eve once I finish Rajaz from Camel.

^ UtF doesn't have a title track, and whatever song you're thinking of, there's totally more stuff going on than one song. I agree that Space Revolver is the best starting point to get into the band. From there you can choose to go backwards for the more symphonic/rock stuff, or go for the later albums for the more jazzy/eclectic stuff.

Sorry I had a typo in my post, The Truth Will Set You Free is what I meant, no matter how hard I try, the rest of UTF does
nothing for me, probably cause TFK shifted to much more jazz after Space Revolver, and that stuff puts me to sleep.
I know you like that jazz stuff quite a bit though. Smile
 
Do you enjoy Pat Metheney or Al Dimeola?

but I've finally checked out the latest Dream Theater album.

I guess on the good side it doesn't have "growls" and the lyrics don't make me cringe or remind me of poor 5th grade attempts at short stories.  The skill of the players, is, as always, impeccable.

First: You mentioned The Chicken Farmer Song, so you are good.
 
Second: I aggree with you on Dream Theatre completely(Not that you need that. Wink) I have tried for years to get into
DT, but the screaming/shreaking vocals and constant metal redundant down strumming of the bass & guitar ruin all of the great musicianship I know is in that band.  And as you said, the lyrics make me cringe as well.
 
So I still am trying to find a DT CD I can enjoy. Mostly cause if a person likes prog(like me) but not prog metal there is a real lack of stuff to listen to.  I have been searching this forum for over a year now and prog metal has so many bands! Non metal prog has far less.Angry    Ouch   Shocked

Adam and Eve has been my go-to FK album for a while.  i am really falling in love with the epics.  just so optimistic.  

i over listened to the last DT as well.  i haven't worn an album out in years.  it is very complicated musically.  it's not one i can drum along with easily.

also, i'm a huge Pat Metheny fan.  more of the group stuff, but all of it is great.  my favorites are Offramp, the first album and Still Live (talking).  so damn good.  it's the closest thing to prog my wife and i can listen to together :-)  she always says, 'i shouldn't like this, but i love it!'

You should check out the Pat Metheny Group live album "The Road To You: Live In Europe". It blows every PMG studio album up til that point (early 90s) out of the water. It was also my first Pat Metheny album so I love it for that reason too. You're wife might really like it.

yeah, great album.  i haven't pulled that one out in a while.  first circle on there is amazing.  i saw the group in 97 for the imaginary day tour.  i've also seen him in the trio set up.  i hope he does a group album at some point again.  it's been too long.  now he is doing the Unity quartet with chris potter.  probably more straight ahead stuff.

I saw Pat Metheny Group live here in the early 90's (1991, I think it was, possibly 1992).  It was absolutely fantastic.  I had always thought of his music as "smooth jazz", i.e. very boring, but that concert completely changed my perception of him.  Excellent stuff (though he does have "smooth jazz" material and some albums bore me to tears).

Yeah, I'll listen more.  I put my first impression here, because I wouldn't write a review after one listen.  I love the Octavarium album, though my favorite DT is still 6 Degrees Of Inner Turbulence.  The title epic is my favorite thing they ever did, and it's amazing on the Score DVD.

I really have to be in the mood for them though, as I'm just not a fan of prog metal generally.  I do like older Pain of Salvation though, but that is really it for me with prog metal.

Yeah, I would actually agree that Space Revolver is probably the best one to start with at this point.  Though I started with Retropolis and it's still my favorite of theirs.

Al Dimeola - Casino is one of my desert island must have records.  Start to finish perfection.  Big smile


Pat Metheny's The Way Up (2005) and Orchestrion (2010) are some of the most progressive jazz / fusion from him. I have other albums where he's on it, and the trio stuff. I'm not a big fan of his solo albums or group albums that go into the smooth jazz territory, though I have a couple. I'm a big fan of "Parallel Realities Live" (1990), the line-up of which is Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, and Dave Holland.

Al's first 3 solo albums are really good, but after Casino I don't really know a lot of his stuff, aside from a few things.

i wonder what the 'extra' stuff is.  maybe a live, in studio dvd of the album. that would rock.  if it's just a bunch of extra songs, I'm not interested.  it's never been that good.  hopefully roine picked the best and has a lot left over so the album is tight and the rabid fans can have all the outtakes.  it could be a disc of covers.

i still need to get orchestrion.  the tour came here, but  i didn't have the money to go.  he does have some lite aspects about him, but i just love his tone and the synth guitar.  not to mention, lyle mays.  his melodies are so compelling.  he's really the only jazz i listen to these days.  in the 90s i had a long stint with fusion etc.  First Circle is the one i've been listening too lately.  not his best, but still fun.  he was on his way out of ECM at that point and i think he just phoned some of it in.  he's another artist, like TFK, that you could spend a lifetime listening too and nothing else.  btw, i love the trio live album from 2000.  not your regular guitar trio.
