Rushfan hmmm I never bought any RTF, I wasn't keen on them first 4 or 5 Al albums are the best ones for me, not the recent ones. Some prefer the recent ones but it's different music. Elegant Gypsy and Casino are favorites of mine. Also he was with Stomu Yamashta on the album "Go" in the late 70's. Friday Night in San Francisco too

that's a very good point
Have to agree as well. Al was always more diverse in his playing anyway, even compared to Carlos in the 70s.

Interesting poll. I think that I would probably have to choose Santana as my favorite between the two based on being more familiar with him, but I've enjoyed the Al Di Meola albums that I have and recently purchased a couple of more of them. I'm not familiar with Return to Forever though, so my mind could change once I get around to checking them out.

I always wondered where Al ---an Italian boy from New Jersey---got his Latin chops---I mean he went to music school in Boston----not too Latin either But his playing is sublime.

Who do you prefer, this is hard because I was completely taken by Santana with Abraxas album and once I heard Al Di Meola's Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway from Elegant Gypsy album I was blown away whooohaaa!!!!!! Al is El Magico for me, my favorite and who do you like most? P.S. Abraxas is also interesting because it was one of the only albums ever released in quadrophonic. Dark side was another!
I'm sorry................i can't think.....i'm in love with your avatar
I silently wondered if this is mutual...

Master DiMeola's guitaristic prowess has a certain tendency to degenerate into rather pointless jingle-jangle which is sometimes quite hard to endure for my sensitive ears. On the other hand, Santana's music doesn't make me go bananas either, but I prefer it enough to give him my vote.
oh, how I wish.............i don't bite much as you would think from my avatar.....only if necesary
still in love......but i'll try............
There is no doubt that Al is great guitarist tehnically but I just can't ''feel'' him. For me he's just sterile and flat. Nothing changes inside me. On the other hand when I put Santana I instantlly feel the wormth and energy that suites me ooooo so well. So much energy and head banging. With Al I feel cold. But that's just me. Who knows maybe that someday will change (maybe I'll move to Mozambique......i mean....erhhh).
You never know what tomorrow will bring........
Lol Gents, hahaahaha you charming cheeky one listen to the track above that I posted, hocus pocus listen... ok that's the wrong band but whaaahaaaaaaaa this is so good Al Magico convinced me right here and there
ooohhhh........she knows my name....i'm melting.....and with your switching poses....i just can't stand it.....and you like Focus.......and I like Focus........it's just too much
i have listened to it and i'm sorry it's just doesn't get to me........it doesn't mean it's not great.........it is .......maybe he is just trying too hard.......sorry no feelings for me.........maybe some day........or night....
it's true that you can be hooked on someone by hearing just one song....it happened to me numerous times
one of my favourites............it blows me awaay
hahahahaha!! Gents no problem, but my mission now is to convince you yes Al is very technical brilliant but not cold really, unlike Santana which is most known for Black Magic Women (track original from Peter Green) Al is just too good, really
sorry for being away a bit................i like converters specially so gorgeus as you.......
i don't know santana just for black magic woman and i know it's green's track and btw i like green's version better
hmmmm. undoubtedly Al is pure genius no question....but i still lack something to grab me with him........
maybe your hugs.....errr i mean posts will....looking forward
sometimes it needs time and just a special something to click you to someone.....this moment with Al I still didn't get

Both
excellent guitarists! But I have to go with Al, he has expanded his
music style so much more than any other guitarist in the world. From
latin to rock to fusion to jazz to world music...you name it Al has done
it, and he does it so naturally and it sounds so fantastic!!

Al DiMeola - especially for "Fantasia Suite for Two Guitars" off of 'Casino.' Electric shredding is done by so many, but very few can do that acoustically like DiMeola does on that classic tune...
"Chasing the Voodoo," off the same album, shows off DiMeola's Electric / Flamenco prowess, but I am almost more blown away by the conga-playing on this song by Mingas...

Carlos is really a blues player with Latin roots; Al went to Berklee music school and is highly trained in all number of styles. Better? Impossible to compare but I'd have to give it to Santana.

Yep Sumdeus, I too understand that, you colourful fluffy teddy bear and I also mentioned that the one track was enough for me to get hooked on Al
