NEO-PROG

A Progressive Rock Sub-genre

From Progarchives.com, the ultimate progressive rock music website

Neo-Prog definition

Neo-Progressive rock (more commonly "Neo-Prog") is a subgenre of Progressive Rock that originally was used to describe artists strongly influenced by the classic symphonic prog bands that flourished during the 1970s. At the beginning of the neo-prog movement, the primary influence was early to mid-70's Genesis. Debate over when Neo-Prog actually came into being often takes place, with some asserting it began with Marillion's Script for a Jester's Tear in 1983. Others contend it began with Twelfth Night at the dawn of the 80s, while some even suggest the popular symphonic prog band Genesis gave rise to Neo-Prog with their 1976 album, A Trick of the Tail.

If one analyses the progressive movement just before 1980, then some albums which heavily influenced the Neo-Prog movement easily come to mind: Steve Hackett - Spectral Mornings, Genesis - Wind & Wuthering, Genesis - And Then There Were Three, Genesis - Seconds Out, Saga - Saga, all the Camel albums between Breathless and The Single Factor included, and some Eloy's albums, especially Silent Cries And Mighty Echoes.

This new form of progressive rock originated in the UK, and is most strongly associated with bands such as Marillion, Pendragon and IQ; and while theatrical stage antics were a part of the live performances of many artists exploring this subset of the progressive rock genre it's the musical elements that are key to the genre; typified by the use of atmospheric guitar and synth soloing with symphonic leanings, with a tendency towards floating synth layers and dreamy soloing. An additional trait is the use of modern synths rather than vintage analogue synths and keyboards. The main reasons for Neo-Progressive artists to be separated from the ones exploring Symphonic Prog in the first place are the above, as well as a heavier emphasis on song-form and melody than some of their earlier symphonic counterparts.

As time went by other artists appeared that also deviated from the norms created by the classic wave of progressive rock artists in the 70's. The late 70's had given the world punk music; the 80's gave the world new wave; and the 90's grunge. These, as well as other forms, had a tremendous amount of influence outside of the progressive rock realm. The advent of the modern synth also inspired artists like Tomita, Vangelis and Kitaro to explore dreamier musical works.

These and other forms of more or less newly made musical genres influenced artists exploring progressive rock as well. Although many artists did so within the framework of 70's progressive rock, more and more artists developed a sound and style so heavily influenced by these more recent musical developments that categorizing them within the existing subgenres of progressive rock became increasingly difficult.

While the Neo-Progressive genre initially consisted of artists exploring a modernized version of Symphonic Prog, these days artists coined as Neo-Progressive cover a multitude of musical expressions, where the common denominator is the inclusion - within a progressive rock framework - of musical elements developed just prior to and after 1980. The Neo-Progressive genre in it's refined form thus covers a vast musical territory, to some extent covering all existing subsets of progressive rock and also searching out towards genres as different as new age on one side and punk and metal on the other.

4 stars I don't think there is much doubt in anyone's minds that one of the most important bands in the Eighties prog scene was Pallas, whose 'Arrive Alive' cassette in 1981 led to the two massively important albums 'The Sentinel' and 'The Wedge'. There was a significant gap until the band reformed to record 'Beat The Drum' in 1999, with founder Graeme Murray and long-time members Niall Matthewson, Ronnie Brown and ex-Abel Ganz singer Alan Reed being joined by drummer Colin Fraser. That line-up released three well-received albums and then Alan left to follow a solo career, being replaced by Paul Mackie, with whom Pallas released two more with the last being 2014's 'Wearewhoweare'. Then it went somewhat quiet on the Pallas front, and what no-one expected was a new album in 2024, a full fifty years since the band were first formed, and with Alan back at the front. Colin has departed, and the line-up is Alan Reed (lead and backing vocals), Niall Mathewson (guitars, percussion programming, vocals), Graeme Murray (bass, Taurus bass pedals, 12-string guitar, vocals), and Ronnie Brown (keyboards, percussion programming, vocals), back in the studio together for the first time since 2005's 'The Dreams of Men'.

One thing I noticed is that in the press release it states, "This is an album which repays countless listens" and that is definitely something I can attest to. The first time I played it I thought it was quite weak with not enough energy and passion, and then the second time it started to attract my attention as I realised just how many highs and lows there were with this and the way the music kept moving, swelling and descending, but it wasn't until the third time that I realised just how good this really is and that instead of being something I was unlikely to listen to again it is indeed a masterpiece ? it shows the need to play albums all the way through at least a couple of times before writing about them, something I know many reviewers tend not to do.

Lyrically this is fascinating as while 'The Sentinel' echoed the concerns of the cold war and the shadows it cast on all of us, 'The Messenger' finds the band reacting to the existential threats to the world we find ourselves in. From what we've done to the world, to the politics that shape it. I have always thought of Alan as Pallas' classic singer, possibly because I enjoyed his vocals with Abel Ganz and numerous works with Clive Nolan, but also as he was the singer in the Nineties when I was so heavily involved with the local prog scene. Strangely I never saw them in concert at the time, as I once left a venue before they were due to come onstage as I had fallen asleep during the previous band's set (I was working nights at the time) and was worried I would not be safe to drive the hundred miles home after Pallas had played, thinking I would catch them again, but I never did.

That is definitely my loss, as while back then they were a little more brash, here they have matured like a fine wine to create something which is full of nuances and embellishments here and there. Niall has taken more of a back seat, coming in to provide emphasis when the need is required, but often letting Graeme (especially with the pedals) and Ronnie to provide the backdrop for Alan to pitch his voice against. I am normally scathing of the use of programmed drums, but due to the style being employed they are not nearly as annoying as normal, and while they will need a "live" drummer to reproduce this onstage here it actually works quite well.

It is packed full of emotion, with multiple threads allowing Alan to play many parts, with the arrangements being massively complex yet also seeming quite simple with everything there for a purpose, with everything in its place. This is one heck of a return from four guys whose first album together was 'The Wedge' back in 1986. So when is the next one?

5 stars REVIEW

SIMPLE ANSWER: this is the best album i have ever listened to

DETAILED ANSWER: i found this band a couple of months ago, and im damn well grateful for it, this album is an underrated masterpiece (im listening to it while writing this), usually, ill pick out one song on an album i like, but this is one of those artists where i have to listen to the entire albums, even though all the tracks are seperated, this feels like one 66 minute long masterpiece. The folk, symphonic, psychedelic mixture works more than perfectly. every single song has an incredible solo aswell as everything else (especially the answer, and something she said) and some great riffs aswell (my favourites being from merry dance, and the answer), the vocals also fit perfectly into this album, the lyrics are kind of cheesy though, which isnt always a bad thing.

this band also uses the choir synth in all of the songs aswell, which to me adds loads more depth and emotion to the solos' and songs.

Overall, this album is a hidden gem in the progressive rock world.

RATING 10/10 (if i could give it higher than a 10/10 i would)

IQ Neo-Prog

Review by Hector Enrique
Prog Reviewer

4 stars After the promotional tour of "Are You Sitting Comfortably?" and the subsequent departures of Paul Menel (vocals) and Tim Esau (bass), the continuity of IQ was very much compromised, to the point of programming farewell shows with Peter Nicholls for the occasion, which by those paradoxes of fate served for the former bandmates to reconnect and decide to give each other a second chance, finally embodied in "Ever", the band's fifth album (1993).

IQ, like a prodigal son, returns to the progressive parental lands with a proposal full of gloomy atmospheres and extensive instrumentation, which does not hide its proud Genesian influences and combines them with home- grown elements more in line with nineties sonorities, from the intense half-time of "The Darkest Hour" and Nicholls' heartfelt singing accompanied by Martin Orford's affable piano in its last section, the gloomy and hypnotic "Fading Sense" and the very thick bass of newcomer John Jowitt in the instrumental wall he builds in complicity with Orford's crisp keyboards and dramatised by the ambient chirping of birds, Its continuity in the stumbling animosity of "Out of Nowhere", until the piece called to be the backbone of the album, "Further Away" with its generous mileage and the good sensations transmitted by the arpeggiated and crystalline keyboards, mellotrons, the Wakemanian moog and flutes of Orford together with the singing of Nicholls, although at times it seems to exceed unnecessarily in its spacious margins, partly hindering its fluency.

And to ratify that the progressive winds guide the path of "Ever", "Leap of Faith" goes through threaded and placid constructions of seventies ambience in one of the best moments of the album, before giving way to the calm and conclusive "Came Down" and ending the work.

"Ever" was one of the solid foundations on which IQ's particular style would begin to solidify, consolidating it in their later works.

Very good.

3 stars IRIS released this one album back in 1996, more or less an all instrumental Neo-prog album. I was attracted to the cover art but really it was hearing that MARILLION's rhythm section was part of this trio that made this an easy decision at the time. So we get Trewavas and Mosley doing their thing but this is the project of multi-instrumentalist Sylvain Gouvernaire who composed the music and plays a variety of keyboards along with the guitar. He was part of that all-star lineup on that CASINO record that was released in 1992 several years earlier so he's been around some talent.

Quite a bit of synths on here but the guitar dominates overall. A very pleasant album where no track really stands out to me. I do wish the drums and bass were more upfront although Trewavas does come to the fore the odd time. Nothing is memorable, but it's quite pleasant and enjoyable. Considering the talent involved I was expecting more but this is the perfect 3 star record.

4 stars SILHOUETTE are a Dutch band who formed back in 2004 and they released their first record in 2006. This is their most recent from 2017 and the majority feel this is their best release so far. This is album number six and they have also released a DVD in the same year of 2017. This is a warm, melodic album with nice vocals and they certainly added some new flavours here with guests adding violin, oboe, french horn, flute and even some soprano vocals. I would call this a Neo/Symphonic mixture.

A 50 minute recording with six tracks including the 18 minute "Symphony For A Perfect Moment" which is certainly the big attraction here, the best thing they have created according to many. I also really dig the shortest piece on here under 3 minutes called "Sakura" which is an instrumental with guitar and atmosphere mostly. But those first three tracks before the epic really set the tone to this album. Neo prog is very much hit and miss for me, mostly the latter but here is a fine example of doing Neo right.

As an aside I actually knew a guy who was convinced that the Earth is flat and the reasons why etc. and he certainly wasn't shy in expressing this view despite the evidence to the contrary. This album is the real deal though and one I think Neo fans should track down. A nice record.

Pendragon Neo-Prog

Review by alainPP

4 stars 1.Fly High Fall Far for the Pendragon sound with Rik Carter on keyboards and Nick's already recognizable guitar; soft title with no interest other than saying oh yes I remember it, in short I don't see anything transcendent in it and keep this impression a few decades later 2 Victims Of Life with the typical intro all at once, orchestral, symphonic, rhythmic, tasty, prog like we didn't think we'd have anymore; well there had been the Twelfth Night of course but it was necessary to scratch a little, and the Marillion who with their hardcore fervor and this support from the fanzines... had put a layer back into the effervescent prog anthill; yes prog was reborn from its ashes; short, melodic, tasty, a long title with the perfect combination of Nick's voice, keyboard and guitar, nothing to waste!

3 Dark Summer's Day with a syrupy atmosphere, bass, keyboards which imprint the sound while the guitar arrives, flowing drops of water overflowing from a waterfall. Final guitar solo on bluesy rather than progressive notes, the origin ultimately 4 Excalibur with a Marillionian, muscular start, which imposes a fat sound... that of the 80s of neo prog; finished the 70s with the extended intros, here it's more nervous to help set the mood more quickly; yes the trauma of the punk wave had passed by; brief 2 minutes of grandiloquent intro and the military drums emerge, the synth gives a bucolic air while Nick's spleen guitar vibrates deeply, beauty on a melancholic base, the one that makes aching hearts capsize; a magnificent instrumental which already shows that the sound is well established with the solo which rises, orgasmic; yes there is often a link with enjoyment in listening to very beautiful music, and there we get right into it.

Are You Sitting Comfortably ?
IQ Neo-Prog

Review by Hector Enrique
Prog Reviewer

3 stars "Nomzamo" had already embodied a stylistic mutation in IQ's musical approach, largely shedding the languishing progressive structures of the second half of the 80's for a more digestible and commercially friendly orientation in which legends such as Yes (Big Generator) and Genesis (Invisible Touch) were also immersed, and which the band's fourth album, 1989's "Are You Sitting Comfortably?", ratified.

Although Martin Orford's futuristic opening keyboards accompanied by Mike Holmes' delicate acoustic notes on the persistent and critical "War Heroes" give it an interesting start, the album once again opts for accessible melodies and a dangerous ride over pop precipices such as the dreary "Drive On" and "Sold on You", or the insipid "Through My Fingers", pieces that do a disservice to the band's legacy.

And both "Nostalgia", the instrumental that precedes the mysterious "Falling Apart at the Seams" and "Wurensh", an intricate piece that Holmes rounds off with some beautiful Spanish guitar arpeggios in its last section, provide the best of the album with their reminiscences of the band's early work, before closing with the hypnotic and conformist "Nothing at All".

"Are you Sitting Comfortably?", the second and last work that featured the correct vocalist Paul Menel who left the band together with bassist Tim Esau after the promotional tour, is probably the most discussed and misunderstood album in the discography of the Englishmen, partly because it follows the aseptic path of "Nozmamo", and partly also because of the successful return to their sources that four years later from the subsequent "Ever" onwards redirected the path of IQ.

2 stars 2.5 stars. CASTANARC are a Neo Prog band out of the UK and they released three studio albums in the 80's then one in '98 before going doormat then returning with a compilation album in 2020 before a return with a new studio album in 2021. I have their first two and prefer the debut to this one. Mine has a different cover art and they also changed the track order on the re-issue and Discogs calls this release a cdr.

You could say this is more mainstream than the debut but the biggest disappointment is the 80's drum machine they use. They also program bass patterns along with drum patterns here and drums sound awful, your a better music fan than me if you can stomach this. Vocals are okay and so is the music otherwise but it's like there's an elephant in the room with the beats. This is more of an Art rock/pop release I'd say than a Neo Prog record like the debut and the debut had a real drummer!.

Very much a disappointment when I was hoping for an improvement over the debut and instead they went in a different direction. A couple of guest guitarists were added as well on here.

Pallas Neo-Prog

Review by siLLy puPPy

3 stars PALLAS is rightfully known as one of the earliest neo-prog bands that along with Marillion, IQ, Twelfth Night, Pendragon and Solstice ushered in the second wave of popular progressive rock in the early 1980s. What's not well known however is that the band formed as far back as 1974 in Aberdeen, Scotland and spent many years hitting the club circuit with the mission of keeping symphonic prog alive while the entire prog scene was clearly in decline. What's also interesting is that the band was first called Rainbow until Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple and assembled a band of the same name and achieved superstardom. After a brief stint as Pallas Anthene, the second part was dropped and has been simply PALLAS ever since.

While the first proper PALLAS album didn't emerge until 1984 way after its contemporaries jumped on the on the neo-prog bandwagon, the band did predate its competition and in fact released its debut EP simply titled THE PALLAS EP as early as 1978 however PALLAS was an entirely different band in those days with only founder Graeme Murray remaining by the time "The Sentinel" saw the light of day. THE PALLAS EP was a completely different beast than anything that came after and wouldn't even be recognizable as a PALLAS release even by the staunchest of followers. Pressed only once as a 7" vinyl recording with four tracks, this earliest offering from PALLAS found itself in a tug of war between Genesis inspired progressive rock and the contemporary sounds of punk rock. This hard to find musical artifact didn't even have a proper album cover and was simply released in a plain 45 styled sleeve with a simple THE PALLAS EP stamped on it.

One of the most unusual moments for any band that would be called neo-prog, PALLAS delivers a strange hybrid of punk rock simplicity with the progressive rock instrumentation such as a mellotron and 12-string guitar. Avoiding any time signature workouts, THE PALLAS EP focused more on simple punk rock songs with titles like "Reds Under The Beds" and "Thought Police" which displayed an anarchic sense of paranoia right out of the Sex Pistols or Crass playbook however the unusual electronic embellishments and high register vocal style of Peter Gabriel and early neo-prog clearly kept this in a world all its own. While Peter Hammill and Van der Graaf were flirting with punk rock crossover moments, their music provided a much more nuanced approach and greater finesse.

THE PALLAS EP is a crude first attempt at the recording process with a shoddy production and garage rock style songwriting. The four tracks on board do offer distinct melodic developments but stick to a short punchy 4-minute-ish running time. The lyrics almost sound like a parody with the opening "Reds Under The Beds" referring to the Red Scare of the Soviet Union and the ensuing paranoia the West had during the era about commies emerging from every nook and cranny ready to dethrone democracy in a McCarthy-esque coup d'erat. "Thought Police" is equally head scratching as it features a few prog moves such as an opening synth solo while three chord guitar punk banters on in accompaniment. The vocals are fairly bad with a laughable attempt to sound punk but failing to evoke all the proper attitude that made punk rock so effective.

"CUUK" offers a bit of bagpipe sounds to a less punk influenced sound and more reliant on hard rock. Vaguely sounding like what Big Country would conjure up in the 80s, the track was perhaps the most interesting musically speaking. The final "Wilmot Dovehouse MP" almost sounds like a tribute to The Who with its Pete Townsend guitar strumming technique but mixes the punkish guitar and bass moves with a trippy new wave styled keyboard heft. The vocals are in the style of an impish elf half-narrating and half-singing a storyline. The EP is one of a kind really and while not even remotely essential for lovers of the neo-prog style, it certainly is an interesting little curiosity that showcased a band experimenting with its stylistic approach before finally latching onto the 80s scene that would make them one of the top artists in the neo-prog second wave of progressive rock. Hard to find but available for a quick spin on the band's Bandcamp site. It's so bad that it's good in a Shaggs sorta way so i'll give it 3 stars.

3 stars While the 80s neo-prog scene is primarily associated with the English revival prog that was launched by Pallas, Twelfth Night, Marillion and IQ, there were really quite a few lesser known bands emerging from other nations around the very same time. In fact of all the earliest known neo-prog releases, only Twelfth Night can claim to have released anything before bands like the Dutch band ARKUS which unleashed its full debut release as early as 1981.

A rather mysterious band formed in the city of Nieuwegein sometime in the late 1970s, ARKUS just kind of snuck in its debut album before the English neo-proggers got their bearing and then disappeared as quickly as it arrived. Strangely the band has periodically reformed and dropped a second album in the 90s and another in 2003. The lineup featured Frans Smits (vocals, guitar), Ron Willems (guitar), Jan-Henk Wiggelinkhuizen (strings, organ, synthesizers), John Bouwman (bass, vocals) and Erik van Duin (drums, percussion, vocals).

While sounding more like an English band than any prog rock that came from the Netherlands, ARKUS evoked more of a post-Gabriel Genesis stance rather than the theatrical early English neo-prog bands. More Camel and even Pink Floyd than Marillion so to speak and as much classic symphonic prog as early neo only the dreamy pastoral kind. The band's debut 1914 was a concept album based on a poem written by Dutch poet and translator Bert Voeten. The original album featured seven tacks at 38 1/2 minutes long.

The band delivered a competent slice of early neo-prog and 1914 is actually quite pleasant. It's a dreamy airy affair with softy strummed 12-string guitars in conjunct with those classic Hackett inspired lead guitar sweeps and a thick synthesized atmospheric back drop. The bassist cops a Pink Floyd feel as have many neo-prog bassists throughout the decades and lead vocalist Frans Smits delivered a smooth competent vocal style that while not the cream of the crop was better than many of the neo-prog acts that could often sound atrocious. The compositions are all fairly consistent and the melodies are catchy from the getgo.

Despite its obscure nature and relative difficult status as an easy to obtain collectible, the album was reissued on CD with a couple bonus tracks. Overall this is a fairly decent slab of primeval neo-prog that didn't even emerge from the British Isles and if ARKUS had stuck it out for the long haul perhaps could've been a contender of best bands of the era but as it stands the album isn't perfect and could've used some spicing up as the formula is set to cruise control and the members needed to hone their chops a bit more for prime time. A nice little obscurity bin but there's a reason this one lingers in the shadows behind the bigwigs of the era.
