4 stars This is a fantastic album, that is terribly missunderstood. I think Peter Gabriel's performances here are magic. The only track here I have hard to understand is "Exposure", a rather progressive track written together with Robert Fripp. If you don't mind that track the album is perfect. Something in Gabriel's voice is so emotional and wonderful even if the voice is scratchy and raw. His voice is honest, melancholic and so totally dramatic here. On some tracks you can feels the same beauty as on Genesis records. I think this feels like the continuing story of "The Lamb lies down on Broadway". This record has som proofs why Peter Gabriel could be one of the world's best singers.

"On the air" has a powerful raw melody and in the end starts a mighty progressive piece of electronic music. "DIY" also shows the power in Gabriel's voice and "Mother of VIolence" is beautiful. My favourite track on the whole record is "White shadow", almost a Genesis-song with astonishing fanfars and symphonic feeling. "A wonderful day in a one-way world" is joyfull and life praising song. On tyhe b-side "Indigo" has peculiar parts and great vocals and "Animal magic" is tragicomic. The short "Flotsam and Jetsam" is wonderful and honest and tehre is something of John Lennon in it. The last two songs don't touch me very much.

Peter Gabriel's second solo record is a very good one. How it has got so low rating here is a mystery for me. This is a record you can't miss!
