4 stars Context is important is considering any musical release. Back in 1987 IQ had followers, but had achieved only modest success. They had lost their distinctive and talented lead singer. At the time "Progressive Rock" was generally derided in the music business. They'd got a contract that allowed them to release on Vertigo, a label that was now worlds apart from what first appeared with the swirl in 1969 - what did the label expect, what direction did it move them in?

All things considered I think both this and the following album were valiant attempts to make the music they liked, but also what would appeal to the listeners of the day (and not just a small fan following). The longer tracks on both still hold up well today, over 36 years later. I still play them and enjoy them, that's what matters to me. I own them both on the original vinyl (as I do the first two albums).

Are they my favourite IQ albums? No. Are some of the others occasionally a bit too convoluted and clever for their own good? Perhaps they are. I'm not that bothered - I own them all, studio and live.
